A good friend has just suffered an ectopic pregnancy resulting in surgery and loss of one of her fallopian tubes.

I don't want to put my foot in it when I see her tomorrow and her husband suspects she really does to want to talk about it with me so I don't want to avoid the subject but its really not something I've ever looked into.

Help ! What are the indications for her chances of getting pregnanty naturally in the future after losing fallopian tube, is it halved or will it be less than that.

Will she have been advised not to try for another baby for some time to let the surgery heal ?

Has anybody had an ectopic/loss of tube and conceived fairly easily or is she likely to need assisted conception ?

Presumably the medical staff will have gone through all this with her and her husband but he didn't talk about that and I don't want to upset her by asking what was said in case it is too difficult for her to relay.

TIA for any help here.

I can't answer all your questions but I have one friend who conceived naturally (and quite easily) after an ectopic/loss of tube and another who is thinking of trying again and has been told her fertilty is only reduced by about 5% overall. Hope that helps a bit.

i had an ep in feb and lost my left tube, since then i have been pg twice. i was advised to wait 3m before trying again, not just coz of surgery but she will need to grieve as well. your fertility IS reduced but many women do go on to have healthy babies afterward. she will probably need some tests including a HSG (they insert dye into your uterus and tubes to check for blockages) so all you can do is to be there for her when she wants to rant/cry this is a great site. there are also lots of women on mn who have had eps if she wants to talk. I had this in nov 2004 I finally conceived again naturally one year ago and have a 3mth old ds2 now.

I had the major emergency surgery not laproscopic so am not sure if this is what your friend has had? Laproscopic is quicker to heal I was not allowed to conceive for 6 mths following my surgery

I did go to assisted conception unit and was prescribed clomid BUT think I conceived that cycle I had the appt!
