Periods have changed suddenly

I am looking to see if some people have had a similar experience to me, and if they went to the gynaecologist and what happened.

Basically end of last year my periods changed, my last two periods have been as follows: spotting for 3-4 days with bright red blood, and then light periods again bright red blood with some menstrual cramps (4-5 days) and one dull ache through the entire time on my right side.

So far in my life I have had intermittent periods, that is in my twenties I sometimes only menstruated once per 9 months. In my thirties as I got married and came off the pill my periods became more regular. And they were always very light, never any menstrual cramps and I just need to say this my period was always a dark brownish/red colour and very thick, often it would only last 3-4 days. But it is this bright red colour and thin in consistency, similar to like I am bleeding having cut my finger or something. I just don't get it. And am thinking of going to see a gynaecologist but worried they might think i am crazy,
