I'm due to have my implant out in April as it will have been in 3 years + 3 years of the one I had prior to this one.. just wondering if anyone had any periods within the last year of it being in.. i had nothing for 5 years then all of a sudden in September I've been getting a bleed every now and then. anyone experienced anything similar? Also would like to hear experiences after having it removed, thanks

I only had the implant twice for about 6-12 months each time due to bleeding twice monthly for a week at a time.

The only thing I can think of when they removed it was that the implant had intertwined with the tissue in my arm but after about a week the bruising subsided.

Hope it all goes well.

I had regular periods, had it removed after a year and had ds 9 months and ten days later!

My implant is due out around now. I had one for 3 years, then got pregnant (took 6 months but wasn't tracking fertility just having unprotected sex) then had another in after baby born for another 3 years (the one due out now) only this year have I had real periods before that I barely had any but now I'm regular as clockwork on it. No idea why 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm on my third implant, due to be replaced next month. I haven't had a period at all in the last 9 years other than 2 months towards the end of my first implant. Completely random and didn't happen again! My GP said not that unusual and not to worry as it didn't mean it wasn't working etc. Just a "body blip"!
I wouldn't worry too much - are you planning on another implant?

SamT210 · 13/01/2019 20:09

Not having another put in as we're going to TTC #1 🥰 I'm just really worried that it's going to take months for my cycle to get back to normal so I've arranged to have it out early (although I'm on a waiting list) we're going on a family holiday in June so we want to hold off until after that so hoping to really be ready June/July time.. just confusing as I'm not sure whether I should count these bleeds as periods because it's so irregular.

I got maybe one or two a year when I had my implant. My Dr said that as you get towards the 3 year mark the implant is starting to run out of hormones so your periods can Start to come back. I got mine removed in March, and got some bleeding after about a week. The month after that af came back as normal.

SamT210 · 13/01/2019 21:18

@StarryEyed88 thanks, that's reassuring I hope mine come back straight away so I can actually start tracking and getting in some sort of routine..

I had two implants back to back over six years, with the last one removed in Nov 2016. While the implants were in, I didn't have any bleeding at all, apart from when the first implant had expired and I was waiting for it to be replaced.

Once removed, I settled down into a regular 27 day cycle very quickly - I gave myself six months of being careful so I was confident that I knew what my cycle was doing and then fell pregnant on our first month of "trying". I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that its the same for you.

I had my third implant fitted seven months after having my DS and its not suiting me this time - I've been getting some random spotting and I feel like the hormones are making me the worst version of myself; absolutely no libido at all (although breastfeeding doesn't help) and I'm always sniping at my poor DH. I think I'm going to have it removed as I also really miss knowing exactly what my body is doing and when I'm fertile etc, even though having periods again will be a complete pain!

@SamT20 hopefully you get back to normal quickly. Also, just so you know I did actually get pregnant after about 5 months, but unfortunately had a mc (nothing to do with the implant of course) so everything seems to be in working order!

@goldenslumbers1 that’s quite strange, I guess maybe having a baby and all the hormones could affect birth control and a different kind might suit. Never really thought about that before. Good luck with what you choose.

SamT210 · 14/01/2019 08:40

@goldenslumbers1 that sounds similar to what I'm experiencing at the moment!

@StarryEyed88 sorry to hear about mc, I'm just hoping this "waiting list" at the doctors shortens so I can get it out I hate not knowing how long it could be
