i know it largely down to chance and old wives tales, but does anyone know of any tips to conceive a girl?

appreciate this might seem a bit flippant when there are people having genuine conception problems. [shame]

men have X and Y chromosones You have X X so it depends on the combination what chromosome of the sperm that fertilises the egg from you im afraid, sorry

LilyLoo · 27/06/2007 15:45

Have you ever looked at the chinese conception charts. There are loads of them on the internet. Depends on mums age and date of conception , might be worth a try it's right for both my dc's.

Pinkchampagne · 27/06/2007 15:54

Have no idea, but I do have a friend who tried all the old wives tales to TTC a girl & the result was her lovely DS3!

Chinese gender chart makes one of mine a girl & the other a boy...I have two DS's!!

derah · 27/06/2007 15:54

I've heard that boy sperm swim faster but die more quickly while girl sperm swim more slowly but last longer (but like real life, actually!) So if you bd before ov, the boy sperm are more likely to have died off and chances higher for a girl. And if you bd after ov, when the egg is coming to meet them, the boy sperm are more likely to get there first. Absolutely not a foolproof plan though.

Don't think anything short of IVF type treatments can give you one gender over another but here is a website full of the wife tales which you might as well try.
www.in-gender.com/

Here is an interesting questionaire, which might help too.

HTH and all the best with your next baby

harleyd · 27/06/2007 22:35

is a book by dr shettle, ithink ? & loads of peops say its worked for them,so im going to get this & also try on the months that the chinese gander chart says that im more likely to get a girl.i would also b intrested in wat methods peops hav used & if they hav worked.i have 2 boys,1stepson& 1 girl so would like 2 balance it up but if not i dont mind another boy.

TranquilaManana · 02/07/2007 11:20

i have 3 boys and a stepson.
have recently started wistfully thinking about having a girl...
i guess adoption is a way to go?

SoupDragon · 02/07/2007 11:25

The chinese charts are a load of b*llocks. I somehow doubt the success of girl or boy sperm has anythign at all to do with the mother's age at conception!

Flip a coin. If it's heads, have sex if tails don't. This will guarantee a girl about 49% of the time.

fairygirl3 · 02/07/2007 11:29

yeah am sure ther are lots of little girls out there needing a good home, its worth giving yr local social services a ring,i spose important thing 2 consider is even havin a particular sex doesnt mean u will get the lovely little girl 2 dress up etc as my girl is quite a tom boy but i think its a naturaL reaction 2 yearn 4 a girl when you hav boys & vice versa,if u do go ahead & try u need 2 b sure that u will b happy even if u hav a boy or u could end up resentful \depressed but am sure u know all this

TranquilaManana · 02/07/2007 11:42

oh blimey, te last thing i want is a little dolly to dress up - goodness no. im quite a tomboy myself.
i just... i dunno. im prob just hormonal. i just kind of alway vaguely imagined having a daughter.
ill get over it in about 10 minsanyway. my boys are deliciousness distilled and i am supremely satisfied with and deeply honoured and appreciatie of my good fortune to have them.

fairygirl3 · 02/07/2007 13:46

hormones they hav a lot 2 answer 4,i want a girl mainly 4 my partner as we hav a son together& he has another son wiv ex & think he wants 2 prove to himself that he can make girls 2,have been thinkin bout havin another 1 for past 6 months but lots of things been puttin me off eg space,£ etc & the fact people seem to disaprove of big families (not that i think 4 is big) but now ive got to the stage that im thinking about it more than im not,so in october (chinese calander girl month) we r gonna start tryin wiv the dr shettles method, but a boy will work out just as well & save us fortune as still got ds2 bbay clothes in loft.

SoupDragon · 02/07/2007 19:56

So, are you only going to TTC on months those stupid calenders say "girl"??? You are joking, surely...

fairygirl3 · 02/07/2007 20:03

umm yeah i know its bit sad but it says october, nov, dec & thats a good time to start trying to fit in with other things, but obviously if it dont happen in them months will keep trying in all months i wont be stopping & starting as im not that bothered but its worth seeing if i can tip the odds in my favour.

goingfor3 · 02/07/2007 20:03

The chinese gender chart got it wrong for me, definatley not the way to go if you want to choose the sex of your baby. Adoption is the only way of being certain!

fairygirl3 · 02/07/2007 20:08

im not desperate for a girl but theres no harm trying out a few old wives tales along the way, this baby will be loved what ever, its health is most important & im not ttc just so i can have a girl its so my son has a playmate i hate to think of him on his own.

SoupDragon · 03/07/2007 11:38

The Chinese charts are utter bllocks though ! At least stick with the "scientific" methods like time of ovulation. The mother's age at time of conception has no* bearing on the sex of the baby.

I have no issues with trying for a particular sex BTW. At least not where it's just tipping the odds for fun rather than a serious "must work" attempt.

pinkys · 06/07/2007 11:55

if you put in to google how to concieve a girl, n they give you different sex positions to try, i showed my partner, and she laughed.
lol
I cant see how it can work, its worth a go thoe, me and my partner are trying for a baby, we would both like a girl, but if its a boy we wouldnt mind atall, aslong as its healthy that all we care about :D

Heartmum2Jamie · 06/07/2007 17:26

I have 2 ds's already and would like another and althought I have always maintained I wouldn't care what it was so long as it is healthy, I would also quite like a daughter, but really love having 2 sons, so I would be blessed either way!

I agree that there are only 2 failsafe ways to get the gender you want, IVF and even then they will only screen for gender for certain genetic conditions or adoption. However, there is some truth to what a previous poster said about boy sperm swimming fast and girl sperm living longer. I am proof that boy sperm swim faster as each of my boys was concieved from having sex on the day of ovulation.

I agree that there is no harm in trying the old wives tales if you really aren't bothered one way or another but it really does bug me when you hear people say (like after a scan to find the sex) that they are disappointed.

manuka · 08/07/2007 16:57

I heard -which is probably nonsence- that "girl" sperm are hardier. Anyway Dh has a VERY hot bath every night- which isn't meant to be good for sperm- and we now have a daughter! So who knows? I wasn't even having periods so that was one hardcore sperm!
