When to have sex?

Ok I know this is a really stupid question... but if my app tells me I'm ovulating on say, 1st December, how often and when should I have sex? DH doesn't think we're doing it often enough (course he wouldn't!! 😂) and now I'm starting to doubt myself...

I would say have sex on 29 Dec, 31 Dec, and 1st and 2nd or at the minimum the important days are the 29th and 31st

mortifiedmama · 27/12/2018 15:29

I'd do it today and every day until 3rd. Maybe with a day break on 29th if you aren't up for it.

First time I got pregnant we did it 4 days before ovulation and thus time was the morning of the day I ovulated.

Only sex we had that month both times!

Graphista · 27/12/2018 15:37

Will say what I say on all threads like this and same advice I've given to friends - based on comments I've seen dr Robert Winston make..

Have as much sex as possible as often as possible.

Fertility Drs apparently say the most common thing they discover when couples go to see them is that the couple aren't having sex very often and are usually not assessing when ovulation occurs correctly anyway.

StarlightIntheNight · 27/12/2018 16:28

Some people are not able to have sex as often as the doctor says...so it helps to figure out when to dtd. I conceived both of my dc first cycle and one try. My dh has a low sex drive so we do not dtd often. Also, it does not help that one of dc usually sleep in our bed. Or our puppy now has learned to open the baby gate so will sometimes come up and wake us in the night :) So we have to plan and hope for the best. We only manage to dtd once during the fertile period. It might take us longer then if we dtd loads...but its not impossible...as we got lucky doing it only once the entire cycle (two times!).

ScarletGlow · 27/12/2018 18:22

Aim for every 2 days during your fertile window (which starts from around 5 days before ovulation to 2 days after it). :)

Kins00 · 27/12/2018 21:51

Is it possible to do it too much that OH won't actually be producing any swimmers? This will be cycle 6 and I really want it to happen this month so plan on DTD every day (much to OHs delight!) but have read every other day is better? I honestly under estimated how hard getting pregnant would be when you spend your whole youth trying to avoid it!

Mamabear12 · 27/12/2018 22:16

My friend got pregnant dtd every day! If your oh is up for it, why not? 😀 my dh would def not be able to! I think they say every other day works better as it gives the swimmers a chance to build up again. I’m thinking last day of period dtd every other day from there until you are a couple days before your next period and that should cover it! Although; if you pick the right day, all you need is once. ;)

ScarletGlow · 27/12/2018 23:21

You are right, every 2 days apparently gives him time to build up better quality sperm but every day will be fine too :)

Didsomeonesaybunny · 27/12/2018 23:48

The week I got pregnant we had sex at least twice a day. My partner at the tine said to me “you are so pregnant right now” and he was right. Have lots and enjoy!

BuffaloCauliflower · 27/12/2018 23:51

I’m also TTC with a lower sex drive partner so this is helpful. We’re going to aim for every other day from the beginning of the fertile window this much. Been half trying for a couple of cycles but really going for this one.

goldflakepaint · 28/12/2018 00:59

I think the research generally suggests that dtd every day is fine assuming your partner's sperm count is normal. Anything more than that may affect swimmers but if you are happy with every day, no reason why not to. I think the key is going with what's works for both of you- I would love to just have as much sex as possible throughout my cycle but dp has a lower sex drive and struggles to finish when we try to have sex several days in a row. Probably psychological but he does say that it also feels quite physical as well like he is running dry Confused. I guess we might find out in a few months if any problem if his swimmers as we will hit the year mark then- but hopefully that will be obsolete by then.

It's definately a good idea to track ovulation through BBT, OPK's, cervical mucus or a combination of the three/all three if you can as it is helpful information even if you are going for the 'sex all cycle' route. If not and you need sex to be more targeted, dtd in the period starting five days before ov and 1/2 days after is a good shout. Day before and 2 days before ov are your bests chances statistically, I think.

purplerainbows · 28/12/2018 09:23

I've got pregnant 3 times now (1 MMC, 1 my daughter and 1 current pregnancy) every time I've got pregnant we've DTD at least once a day for 4 or 5 days before a positive OPK (estimated using pregnancy app like OVIA) and then until the positive OPKs end. So this month I had two days of positive OPKs so we DTD on both those days and 4 days previous to that. When we first started TTC we did every other day and it didn't work. I did BBT with my daughters pregnancy and that did help to pinpoint ovulation but I found just the OPKs alone this time were enough.

As pp have said I think the every other day thing comes from a recommendation for lower sperm count.

Kins00 · 28/12/2018 10:24

Thank for sharing what has worked for you! Tried every other day previous months and it hasn't worked so will try daily this month until a couple of days after ovulation and pray for a BFP!

Mamabear12 · 28/12/2018 12:42

And perhaps if daily or every day doesn’t work, try the one day. It’s worked first cycle and one try for us both times. Dtd 2 days before ovulation 😀 this time around we will see if we get lucky again. The last couple cycles we tried we did a day after ovulation (circumstances prevented the right time).

serenawren · 29/12/2018 13:54

Thanks everyone! Cycle number 6 for me and it's starting to get me down to the point of questioning whether I'm doing it enough or at the right times. I know the average time it takes to conceive is a year, but just can't help it!!

madmum5811 · 29/12/2018 13:57

I remember reading those little swimmers live for up to three days, so every other day should be fine.

Blondemother · 29/12/2018 20:50

If you’re only going by what the app says, bare in mind it might be a bit off - I use Flo and it keeps predicting my Ov 3 or 4 days before I get a positive OPK. Give yourself a nice wide window of opportunity!

gossipgirl28 · 30/12/2018 16:39

I'd recommend OPKs and look out for other signs too such as CM to see when the best time to DTD is.

I fell pregnant cycle 8 and I was temping, using OPKs etc.
DTD on the Mon, wed, Thurs and sat. I ovulated on the Fri and had Positive OPKs on wed and Thurs.

Good luck xoxo

SweetheartNeckline · 30/12/2018 16:52

I've got pregnant the first month of using the Sperm Meets Egg Plan 3 times now. I didn't get pregnant just doing it every other day, or just not trying, not preventing.

Work out your cycle length and subtract 18 from it, so for 28 day cycle start OPKing on day 10. If 40 days start on day 22, 21 days start on day 3 etc. Do OPKs daily until you get a positive, and also have sex every other day. Once you get a positive or very very close OPK have sex that day and the following 2 days, then miss a day and have sex once more for luck.

serenawren · 06/01/2019 17:16

Hi everyone, got my BFP today! Can't quite believe it! Still very early days but thanks to everyone for your advice 😘
