Can you ovulate twice?!

Hi all- would appreciate some advice as I just received some confusing information!

I thought I had identified my ovulation day (6 days ago) and my BBT chart all looks as expected - but I just had a scan at the hospital and the lady doing the scan said that she could see that I was about to ovulate?!

I’ve posted a screenshot of my BBT chart. Any advice would be very appreciated! I was pleased that we’d BD at the right time (or so I thought) but now I’m upset that I’ve got it wrong :(

Thank you in advance! x

Can you ovulate twice?!

Sorry posting again because I’ve been trying to google the answer to my own question and have worried myself further 🙈

Has anyone experienced Luteinised Unruptured Follicle Syndrome and could this be it? Apparently you get the LH surge and temp rise but the egg didn’t actually release and is “stuck”... so on the scan it would look as though you’re still going to ovulate even though you’re not?? (This is my basic understanding from google so if anyone can correct me please do!!) 🤯

Thank you x

It could have been a small cyst. Not abnormal. Did she see a corpus luteum, perhaps?

Foxy84 · 10/12/2018 19:29

Thanks for your reply! Would a corpus luteum look similar to a pre-ovulation follicle on the scan? If so then I guess that is possible! She seemed to think I was about to ovulate but has sent the scans on to my doctor so I guess I won’t know for sure until my appointment with the doctor next week...

Yes you can ovulate twice, that is how non-identical twins are conceived.
Good luck!

Hi there - just thought I’d share the conversation I had with my nurse yesterday on this very topic! I’m in clomid cycle 1 to try to conceive and have been having regular scans. A week yesterday they found one follicle at 19mm on the right and one follicle at 12mm on the left. Nurse said ‘better get down to it, that right one will go anytime!’ I asked what about the left one and she said your body produces progesterone when you ovulate that makes the remaining follicles shrink back and collapse so she thought one follicle was it and that’s obviously good, the clomid worked.

Yesterday (also Monday) I was back for another scan only to be told that the scan clearly showed i’d ovulated on both the right and the left! The right follicle was collapsing back and the left was still large but ‘squigdy’ if you know what I mean, not a perfect circle, meaning it had released and fluid was leaking into it.

However, I asked the nurse if it’s possible I ovulated from each a few days apart and she said no. In order to ovulate you need an LH surge and you only get one of those a cycle, so chances are I got a big surge which caused the left to catch up and both to ovulate in response to the same surge.

Obviously this is one nurses opinion but it seems to make sense scientifically.

Thank you for the replies! :)

@FeeneeTTC thanks for sharing, that is interesting! So I guess I definitely couldn't have ovulated last week AND this week - either I (and the Natural Cycles app) got it wrong last week, or the lady doing the scan was wrong about this week!

That sounds like a very successful first cycle on Clomid, fingers crossed for you!! 🤞🏼

Thanks @Foxy84. We've been TTC for 2.5yrs so it would be amazing if clomid works for us.

Based on what the nurse said, yes I agree with you, it was probably one or the other. If I were you I'd DTD tonight just so you know you've covered both bases haha! Hope it all goes well for you too Smile

stellarfox · 11/12/2018 20:34

No you can't ovulate twice! You can get a surge and your body gets ready to ovulate but it doesn't actually ovulate, and then it tries again in a few days normally. Temps can be off due to a number of factors. Just keep DTD around when you think you are ovulating.

Lymphy · 11/12/2018 22:32

@stellarfox is bang on, You ovulate once, as stellar says your body may try a couple of times if unsuccessful, However when you ovulate you can release more than one egg hence multiple births
