Conceiving less than a year after c/s: will my uterus have healed?

Because I read that c/s gives greater chance of miscarriage of second children anyway, I was wondering if there was a period I should leave to make sure my uterus is ready to have another baby. I don't know why I'm even thinking about having another, this one is a terrible sleeper, and another year without sleep may just kill me, but it just, somehow, is starting to feel right. I was thinking of trying in September, she's 6mo now.

I was told not to get pg within a year of having my cs - to give it time to heal. Ask your health visitor or midwife

I was told 6months to a year for it to be completely healed. It depends on how fit you are and your age, as we heal better and faster the younger we are.

I conceived (accidently) after a c-section when my dd1 was 5 months and I miscarried at 8 weeks.

You might be OK in September, just see how you feel?

I too would leave it at least a year. I had a c/s then got pg a year when dd1 was 12months, but 3 months later had a miscarriage. However, after one normal cycle after the miscarriage bleeding, they said it was OK to try to conceive again, and I did! DD1 was about 17 months then and it all went fine after that. Now have 2 dds with 25 months between them.
Good luck!

I have conceived within a year after each of my sections, never heard anything about it being a problem .

After my second section I gave birth naturally, there is 20 months between the two (conceived when she was 8 and a half months - I have long pregnancies).

Haven't suffered a miscarriage, although I have also heard that it takes longer to conceive after a section (didn't happen to me but might be worth taking into consideration)

Good luck in ttc - enjoy it

I had a little accident when ds was only 6 mo - after having an emergency CS. The little accident is now 4 and everything was fine. I did have mild spd during pregnancy no 2 but the drs said that wasn't realted to getting pg so quickly after a cs. The surgeon did say during my 2nd cs that the wound was stil healing inside from the first but that he would give me a neater scar as it was a planned cs! It is hard early on having 2 so close together and to be honest I feel I missed the first 6 months of dds life as I was so exhausted. It's much easier now they are 4 and 5 and like doing the same things.

Thanks SO much for all those wise, excellent replies. It does seem smarter not to rush into things - if I had a miscarriage and blamed myself for being stupidly hasty, I think it would break my heart, well obviously it would anyway, but these things are worse when you've been told risks and go ahead anyway, if it goes wrong. I'll wait till the new year. I think it just comes from absolutely loving my baby because she's a baby, after I was convinced I wasn't ever going to be a baby person and being terrified I wouldn't really love her. I'm 35 and don't have too much time left - but that would mean my c/s would also take longer to heal! (I think no one would describe me as fit!)

Thanks again, these posts are absolutely invaluable. Great to hear about the lucky 'mistakes' - your kids are going to adore each other! I have a very small gap with my brother and we're really really close.

My friends had an emergency cs 6 weeks ago and the doctor recomended 2 years.

I had an emergency c-section last November and my GP said that it's best to wait 6 months. But it wouldn't be the end of the world if I accidentally got pregnant sooner. I'm 33 by the way, I daresay age & general health comes into a bit.

I conceived DD2 when DD1 was 8 months old after an emergency section. All was fine in pregnancy and DD2 arrived 4 weeks ago by elective section. all fine no problems at all. I am 29 if age is a factor at all

amariage · 12/07/2007 17:48

hi I got pregnant when dd1 was 6 months old and that was my 2nd section and I had no probs.

NAB3 · 12/07/2007 17:50

I think everyone is different. It would have been a disaster for me if I had conceived sooner than the 19 months it was after my 1st child. It was actually number 3, who was born 4 yrs and 3 months after my first that was the problem.
Retained placentas are common after c-sections if you have a vbac but you won't read that anywhere.

Also, I wasn't sewn up properly after DS1 so had to have it resutured 15months after the birth.
