Got pregnant first cycle lucky but sadly miscarried at 9 weeks (medical management) in August.

Following a blood test for thyroid I am now being referred to an endocrinologist as thyroxine levels are slightly high.

Anyone else beem through similar? Starting to panic slightly.

Tia!

Hi,
I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid in june 2017. My t4 levels then were 64!! We were ten months into ttc with no luck at this point. My levels finally settled in January 2018 and i was moved off carbimazole and put on propylthiouracil. We then had a pregnancy in march 2018 which we sadly miscarried at 5.5 weeks. This week I have started off my referral to the infertility clinic as we haven't had any more success.

I wouldn't panic! It is scary but you need to get the t4 levels down to enable a healthy pregnancy.

Thank you for your reply @ilovetrees30
I am very sorry for your loss, heartbreaking after trying for so long. Wishing you all the best at the clinic and have everything crossed you get your bfp soon.

I don't actually know the levels yet as the doc called just saying needed to refer. Fingers crossed it can be managed! So desperately want to be pregnant again.

My levels did come down quickly once I was on the tablets and if you are only a bit high it should hopefully be a quick fix.

Thank you for your lovely comments. I really hope it happens for us soon!

You need to get to know your levels and what they mean. Generally you need to keep track of your tsh (which should be lower than 2.5) and your ft4 (which should be 16-20, ideally). Tsh above 4 is generally aubclinical hypothyroid. Above 10 is hypothyroid. Tsh below 0.05 is hyperthyroid.

Both conditions are bad for pregnancy. Both are easily sorted with meds and monitoring. It can take a few months to get your levels right on the correct dosage.

Thank you both!

@physicskate thank you very much, that is really useful. Did you have to stop ttc whilst levels adjusted?

My TSH was only 3.98 but my fertility clinic put me on a small dose of levothyroxine abut 6 weeks before we started our IVF cycle (which was, fortunately, successful).

I don't think you will be made to stop ttc, but it is up to you as high tsh in particular is linked to miscarriage and low iq of resulting babies.

ilovetrees30 · 24/10/2018 15:59

As my t4 (thyroxine) was high and my tsh unreadable I was told I had to put ttc on hold till they were stable and normal levels. Which was about ten cycles.

@ilovetrees have you got graves disease? I had MMC in June 17 and was diagnosed with Graves February 18. All levels stable since July 2018. 5mg carbimazole daily.

ilovetrees30 · 28/10/2018 08:43

@Presh12345 yes i had been diagnosed with graves disease. I am currently on 5g PTU daily as we were told we couldn't ttc if I was still on carbimazole. I struggled a bit with the diagnosis because it means it could come back but such is life and at least now I know the symptoms to look out for.

Presh12345 · 28/10/2018 09:25

So many mixed stories about carbimazole and ttc. I've read loads about it being unsafe, yet my endo says it's fine as I'm not on a huge dose. Still not pregnant though and doing first iui this week!

ilovetrees30 · 28/10/2018 09:50

@Presh12345 its so confusing how even the Endocrinologist's can't maintain a status quo!! Good luck for your IUI. I am just starting my infertility investigations but I am hoping I've invoked sods law and will be successful this month.
