40 and single, too late for a baby??

I saw a friend of mine today and she was quite upset about a doctor's appt she had yesterday. She recently turned 40, is single but would like to have a baby. The doctor basically told her to forget about it.

Is it too late at 40? She has been seeing someone off and on for years but he doesn't want to have children. Is artificial insemination an option and would NHS cover it for a single woman? If not, does anyone have any idea of costs, etc?

She was so upset to feel that she had lost the opportunity to have a child of her own. I think she would consider adoption but I understand that can be quite difficult for a single person too. Anyone have any advice I can pass on?

Many thanks

my friend met her partner when she was 40, conceived 2nd month they tried. had baby later that year.waited a few months, tried again, same thing happened and had her second at 42.

age alone isnt the sole indicator of fertility. there are lots of 25 year olds on mumsnet who are ttc without success

good luck to your friend

btw adoption agencies will not consider her until she is finished with fertility treatment

Sorry that wasn't clear. i dont mean she HAS to do it before they will consider her. I mean that IF she does it, she has to have finished all her treatment before they will start the adoption process. She can't do both simultaneously. And they will know because they require a medical report from your GP.

I have friends who have done both and adoption is MUCH harder, longer and more expensive than fertility treatment. And she wont get a new born baby at the end (if that matters to her)

If I were her I would check out the dating option and AID option simutaneously (but keep quiet about it IYKWIM)
