TTC and breastfeeding

Morning posters and lurkers!

At some point in the not too distant future my hubby and I would like to TTC#2. I'm still breastfeeding number 1 - haven't had a period and have absolutely no idea where I am cycle-wise. I know that it is quite possible to get pregnant whilst breastfeeding, but am looking for some advice as to how to know when to try/work out my cycles for the very best chance?

Am interested in hearing any experiences from those who have conceived whilst breastfeeding. 😊

I don't think there is any way to know without a period. You either have regular sex and take a pregnancy test every few weeks, or you wait until your period returns and then start tracking.

Take it from someone who spent 7 months doing ovulation tests and tracking "ovulation" symptoms when in reality my period wasn't coming back until I completely stopped breastfeeding when DS was 19 months! Waste of time all that in the end.

Oh and just to add if you didn't already know, you can't get pregnant without your period coming back.

Well, strictly speaking there may be one opportunity, and that's around 2 weeks before your first period when you might ovulate for the first time since giving birth (some women don't ovulate for a cycle or two after breastfeeding). Then that would be what's known as "catching the first egg". Near enough impossible to pinpoint when that's going to happen and usually comes down to luck.

My cycle didn’t get back to anything like normal until my son was 3 (I stopped breastfeeding when he was 2 years, 3 months). My oestrogen levels dropped really low that whole time - not sure what that means for ttc but good luck!

I'm breastfeeding and Ttc just now. My periods came back at 6 months despite EBF however I'm yet to have a positive OPK so I may not be ovulating. My DD is 16 months so i only feed her in the morning and at night.
