Miscarriage or ectopic?

Hello all.

Had hcg levels done 2 days ago and were only 15. I am aware of how low this is. Had a repeat done today and only raised to 19. I am aware this won’t be viable but was really hoping today it had gone down so I can move on but now it’s dragging out.

Anyone had the same and what happened?

Many thanks

How far along do you think you are?

Sorry it’s not the news you were hoping for.

Only 4 weeks. I’m annoyed I did a test! I did a test as i gagged at hand cream and thought oh I better check. I was about 10dpo when I found out and then started bleeding 11dpo. When the bleeding started I just thought oh ok it’s a chemical and was going about my day then I got pain +++ that was sharp. And called the gp and explain and now I’m here with the smallest increase in hcg which I would much rather have just gone down! And just wish it was over x

Have you had an ultrasound done at your EPAU? I'd ring them and ask for one. Most hospitals do EPAU on a Saturday morning too. Normally your bloody should be doubling every 48 hours. This would still happen with an ectopic pregnancy and sometimes a miscarriage too. They should ask you to come for a repeat scan a week later incase there is any change too.

BuntyII · 07/09/2018 15:56

What does the gp suggest?

rachyrach300 · 07/09/2018 16:58

Sorry I’ve Been to epu and they did the bloods and lm for repeat blood again tomorrow. Just don’t understand why the HCG wouldn’t reduce when I’m bleeding. The bleeding has stopped now and I feel sick but that might just be anxious than anything else.

Wish it was just a simple reduce instead I’ve got a feeling they r gunna go up again a little bit but obv not enough to be viable but enough that whatever is going on isn’t straight forward. Feel like I’m going a little crazy.

Sorry to rant I just feel very lost

Being only 4 weeks nothing would show on a scan so don’t feel there is much point in a scan at the moment and with such poor HCG levels not a good combo at all

Ive just had an ectopic and my numbers did go up slowly thats why they suspected ectopic. They then started dropping very slowly. Took 6 weeks to go from 133 to 0.

rachyrach300 · 07/09/2018 17:05

What did they do to sort out the ectopic if you don’t mind me asking? X

rachy you really need to keep an eye on this. I’ve have two eptopic, one ruptured. They can be deadly.

If you have severe pain again go straight to the EPU.

Bombardier25966 · 07/09/2018 17:13

A transvaginal scan may well show something if it is an ectopic. Are you still in pain, any other symptoms?

Bluecloudyskies · 07/09/2018 17:13

With both my eptopics it ended in surgery.

I caught the first one as I had scarring in both tubes so when I found out I was pregnant they sent me for a scan ASAP. I was 6w1d. They took my tube out.

The second one I thought I was having extremely bad endometriosis pain and was bleeding so just thought it was my period as it aggravates it. Went to walk in clinic for some strong pain killers, she made me do a test. Positive. Sent me to EPU where it ruptured and I was rushed in to theatre. I was 7 weeks.

Be very careful love

rachyrach300 · 07/09/2018 17:18

I have some pain but I thought my levels were to low to be a ectopic?? I thought they needed to be in the 100s to 1,000s. Not the pathetic amount mine are lol! (Sorry gotta make some humour outta this)

I've not heard of such a low HCG before but searching online there are reports of both viable pregnancies and miscarriages with low results.

Ectopic is difficult to diagnose (and even harder without a scan) because the symptoms can be so random. I barely bled (and it was "normal" blood, not menstrual) but the pain was mind blowing, whereas others will have mild (or severe) shoulder tip pain and lots of bleeding. Mine ended on rupture and tube removal also.

What has the GP/ EPU recommended next?

Bombardier25966 · 07/09/2018 17:32

There's a support group on FB called Ectopic Pregnancy Support Group. I'm sure they wouldn't mind you asking in there, it's normally quite busy so you'll hopefully get more responses.

Have they checked your progesterone level?

shivbo2014 · 07/09/2018 17:34

Sorry not sure how to reply to individual posts! I had expectant management so just let my body reabsorb the pregnancy naturally. They only offered this as my levels were very low and started decreasing. I didnt really want the injection they did say I could have it though. Do they think yours is ectopic? have they scanned you yet? They did struggle to find mine in the tube at first.

wildewillow · 07/09/2018 18:23

I surprised they didn't offer you a scan while you were in EPAU. I'd be requesting one when you back tomorrow for your bloods. I work in ultrasound so know they do scan on ladies as early as you think you are. They may not be able to see anything other than a sac but it would be very handy to rule out other things especially if you are having some pain. They would take a good look at your womb, endometrium and ovaries. Generally you won't see an ectopic pregnancy on an ultrasound as you can't always see the tubes but it's not unheard of so worth a scan I think.
Even with a miscarriage you're bloods still might go up for a few more days before your body realises what's happening.

marriageoftrueminds · 07/09/2018 18:31

I had an ectopic pregnancy, my hCG levels were low but higher than yours - think they were around 60 to start with and went up to around 200 ish at their highest. I wasn’t in a lot of pain and didn’t need any treatment; was just monitored for a month to make sure it was resolving. I then got pregnant again within 6 weeks.

They won’t be offering you a scan yet because they wouldn’t be able to see anything yet - they only finally saw my ectopic on a scan after several attempts when the hCG was at its highest, and it was quite a senior aonographer and still took her a while to identify it. But do keep going to get your bloods checked, I kept ringing every day pretty much to say I was still bleeding and in pain. In my experience everyone in the hospital was lovely and I felt in good hands, but I do think it’s worth chasing and being proactive as they are so busy. I even went to A&E a couple of times when the pain got worse on two evenings.

Good luck.

marriageoftrueminds · 07/09/2018 18:32

Ah just seen @wildewillow ‘s post about scans - I am not a medical professional so obviously take her advice over mine, mine is just my personal experience.

rachyrach300 · 08/09/2018 17:29

Update - 3rd repeat hcg level now 63.

So 1st - 15

48 hours later 2nd - 19

Another 48 hours later 3rd - 63.

Now even more confused!

LatteLover12 · 08/09/2018 18:13

They’re really low numbers, what does the GP think?

shivbo2014 · 08/09/2018 18:53

It does sound like it may be an ectopic, sorry to say. What have the doctors said? Are you still bleeding/having any pain? Have they said they will scan you? With mine as soon as they seen the numbers were increasing slowly they said this is a sign of ectopic rather than a miscarriage as we first thought and they wanted me back in straight away for a scan.
