Was this the right day for a progesterone test?

I just had a '21 day' progesterone test. So I had a much shorter cycle this month which has probably affected my results. I had ovulation on cycle day 15 according to my temp shift. I had the progesterone test 9 days later on cycle day 24. I then had a period on day 25. I normally have af on cycle day 32. So I ovulated 7 days early and had a period early too. Does it matter my af was the next day after the test? My luteal phase is only 10 days and so I think my progesterone is a problem. I get the results tomorrow but not sure how valid they will be

Meant to be taken 7 dpo... so you might want to do it again next month.

Rainyshowers · 06/08/2018 20:44

But if my luteal phase is only 10 days do I still do the test 7dpo? That will only be 3 days before af. So confused!

Yes.

I'd just wait and see what the results are. If the levels are low or something you'll probably be asked to have another test next month. I have irregular cycles and a slightly short luteal phase. I thought I'd be told to re-test but was told it was fine anyway.

Rainyshowers · 06/08/2018 22:15

It's just if I do need to re-test I want to make sure we book it in for the right day as this month was 9dpo and only one day before af. But if I test right before af won't the progesterone levels be dropping?

Isn't that part of the point of what you're testing for? Inability to sustain progesterone levels. 7 dpo.

Rainyshowers · 07/08/2018 05:15

That's a good point. So if my progesterone is dropping at 7dpo I may not be able to begin or sustain a pregnancy. I had an early miscarriage last year and now only a 10 day luteal phase so I think this may be a problem for me.

You've made me just realise that I was told to have the test at 7 days before period was due, not day 21 as I have long cycles. I should imagine some women have to be re-tested a lot.

Rainyshowers · 07/08/2018 13:25

I get confused as I've read both 7dpo and 7 days before af. Or should it be mid luteal phase? So much confusing info on this. I got my results today. They were 8 which is v. low but was done at 9dpo. My Dr booked another one for next month but I have no idea when would be the best date. Why 7dpo if I have a10 day luteal phase?

Hi, I had a similar problem - with me its a 10-12 day luteal phase but for the last few months am also seeing spotting/temp drop from about 9dpo. Agree there's conflicting advice even from the drs re 7dpo vs 7 day pre period. Not an issue with a textbook 14 day LP but not clear for us!
Agree with pp that we want to know if the progesterone is dropping off early (suspecting so with shorter LP and spotting) but also want to make sure there is some sort of peak before that to confirm ov. (Prob need 2 tests really but try getting GP to agree to that!)
First test ended up being 9dpo with spotting later that day, and no use ( I wasn't able to rearrange the test appt when I knew my ov date as my surgery need 3 weeks notice, bit daft as I knew it was too late). This time I went for 6dpo (7dpo a Saturday), I will report back to let you know if that worked any better. Best of luck! 🙂

Hi @Rainyshowers, reporting back as promised but not sure if it will help you sorry - test last month (9dpo) result was 13, this time at 6dpo result is 16 and stated 'not indicative of ovulation' (which is obviously not what i wanted to hear!)
In terms of whether my test was properly timed, i think so but hard to say, I have had spotting from evening of 9dpo (so 3 days post test) which is still going now (13dpo) with period still not fully kicked in. In your position I'd prob go for 6/7 dpo, any earlier then I don't think it has had chance to peak. Hope all goes well.
