Periods after implant removal (nexaplanon)

Hello!

I hope this is the right place to post (just started TTC).

I had my contraceptive implant in my arm removed a little over 4 weeks ago. I hadn’t had any periods for 2 years and 4 months while it was in place, but the doctors reassured me this was a normal side effect.

3 days ago I started my first period since having the implant removed. I was so happy and relieved to see that my body was doing as it should, but today (on the 3rd day of bleeding), the flow has completely stopped and I’ve now just got brownish discharge.
My periods prior to having the implant were always 6 days long and pretty heavy for at least the first 4 days. I’m really concerned that it’s messed up with my cycle/hormones and this will affect my chances to conceive.

Is there anyone out there who can shed light/offer some reassurance?

Does anyone have any suggestions/natural remedies for getting a regular period back?

It really is just a waiting game. I had the implant (for 6 months) and begged them to remove it. It took 5 months for my period to return and a few more before they became regular. The first period I had lasted half a day then came back two weeks later. It was a nightmare. But it HAS settled down now.

I'm 25 weeks pregnant and had no trouble conceiving, just took a while to become regular again. It's unnerving OP, having no control over your bodily functions. Just know that your body is an incredible machine and will almost definitely sort itself out.

I'd give it a few months and if still not back to normal, head to GP for advice. Best of luck!

It's probably just your hormones settling down, it can take a few months to get back to normal. Your fertility could have already returned though so keep trying! I'm in a similar boat, I've been ttc for about 18 months but I had a long expired nexplanon that was possibly affecting my periods and fertility. I had it removed last week, got period 3 days later (it was already on its way), and I'm hoping for a normal length cycle this month, unless I'm really lucky and finally get my BFP!

Hey I’m in the same boat as you. I had my implant out on the 3rd and I’ve just had the one period for about 3 days as well so I’m hoping that they do get back to normal soon!!! The sooner the better eh 😀

Good luck to you both. Sorry if TMI but I've had proper EWCM for the first time in years (when I was 21 and didn't know what the hell it was Grin). Feel silly for not removing it sooner, it was obviously still releasing hormones. But if I do get pregnant soon I'll be too relieved to be mad at myself.

Hi need abit if help, I've had my implant removed now for a year and a half at first i had a little bleed for half a day then two weeks later had the same again then it disappeared. And I haven't had a period since its been about a year and 4 month now I'm worried I won't be able to have kids I am waiting on a scan of my womb and ovaries but just wondered if anyone else had this problem and any advice. I am a big build lady wondered if it maybe my weight and in bigger people it may take longer to return to normal any advice welcome thanks

Hi Kellymia

I am in the same situation. Did you manage to get anywhere?

BeckyC1888 · 20/10/2023 03:36

Hi did you get any further with your periods?

ken01x · 04/01/2024 19:00

I hope i’m in the right place:
So i’ve had 2 implants in my life time and i’m 22 both of them caused my periods to completely stop (which i know is normal for some) but before that my periods were really heavy. My second i’m implant was in my arm for 11 month after the expiration date (my fault) but 4 days before i had the implant removed i was experiencing deep abdominal pain and then i went to the toilet and a fountain of blood came out (very dark/brown, with loads of blood clots) i went really light headed and i had pain for about 2/3 hours after but then it stopped (didn’t think anything of it) until i thought it could of been a unaware miscarriage?! But now ive been “on my period” for 15 days straight now? is this normal? When having sex with my partner it makes the blood heavier and darker?

I had my implant removed and within a couple of hours started a random period... I shouldn't be due a period for another couple of weeks, is this normal?
