Help! Is it possible to ovulate while still taking progesterone? Confused (Title edited by MNHQ)

My gynae has put me on luteal phase progesterone, as I have been experiencing some spotting before my period as well as having suffered three early pregnancy losses. I don't temp because I've always had very obvious ovulation pain and fertile CM, so I tend to know when I ovulated.

So I have had EWCM since Monday, which was CD13. I thought I had ovulation pain on Thursday, although it was quite faint, so I started taking my progesterone yesterday. I have now taken 3 doses (supposed to take morning and evening). However, I am still having EWCM and now having much more pronounced ov pain Confused. Is this even possible though? I thought taking progesterone stopped ovulation? Has anyone experienced this? I'm very confused! Thanks in advance Smile

When giving out progesterone only methods for contraception pill or implant we always say it might prevent ovulation so with those types yes you still can, it still works as contraception by other ways, however the injection basically knocks your ovaries out so no ovulation all three are progesterone but different types, that may be no help at as all just my knowledge of progesterone in contraceptive terms, with yourself I'd say it depends on the type and dosage you are on x

I got pregnant whilst taking progesterone tablets for excessively long periods (they would sometimes last three weeks). So yes, you can definitely ovulate!

Thanks both! Conflicting advice there Confused. Is there anyone else here who has taken progesterone in the luteal phase? It's making me nervous thinking that I might have inadvertently prevented ovulation when I'm TTC

I don't think it can stop ovulation. (Although it may) but have you tried temping? If you do bbt then you can confirm ovulation alongside opks. Which will give you a confirmed answer of if you've ovulated. Then you can take the progesterone at the correct time. (This may not be useful info for this month but maybe for next month) good luck

Thanks @cakelaur. I have a weird thing about temping. It feels as though if I start doing that, the whole TTC thing will take over my headspace even more than it already does Sad I know it's probably silly but I really wanted to avoid that, if possible. I also don't use opks either. Maybe I'm being stupid Sad

Even if you do it for a couple of months. You can then confirm what day you ovulate. Or how many days after opk you ovulate. If you're like clockwork you can probably drop it back. Or you may time everything perfectly and catch that month. But I know what you mean. It does start to take over your life. All the peeing on sticks and temping every morning.

Secretlifeofme · 08/07/2018 12:40

Hmm. I just don't think I want to though :( I already get wound up every month as it is! Do you think that ovulation pain and CM is an unreliable way of telling, then?

Not necessarily. Only that you were saying you felt it twice. I can't tell when I ovulate without temping and opks. But some ladies can. So whatever works best for you babe.

Secretlifeofme · 08/07/2018 13:21

Yes I know! Ironically it's the first time that has happened. I think I was so anxious to know when I was ovulating that I imagined the pain the first time Hmm Grin

OK, so it seems from the change in CM that I definitely ovulated yesterday. I wonder if anyone else has had this experience? It would be great to hear from others who have been on progesterone during the luteal phase.
