I'm breastfeeding my nearly 9 month old dd and my periods haven't returned yet. We are using contraception (mini pill and condoms) at the moment but would like to have another baby at some point. However, do I have to wait until my periods return? How likely is it that I'd get pregnant whilst still breastfeeding without my periods having returned?

IME the longer I go with lactational amenorrhea, the longer it takes to get normal cycles again once they start up. My first 2 are only 18 months apart and I didn't have a period in between, but my youngest is 18 months now and I'm only just starting to show some vague signs that my periods will return. Probably within the next couple of months, definitely by the end of the year.
