Coming off of Cilest

We are thinking of having a baby but not just yet. I’ve been on the pill for 15 years.

How long did it take you to get pregnant after being on the pill for around the same length of time?

Just wondering if I should come off it now and let my body get back to “normal” or wait until I’m ready to start trying to conceive.

I came off cilest and didn’t even have a period. I was pregnant straight away.

EEB1989 · 03/07/2018 16:10

Where you on it a long time? I’m just worried because I’ve been on it 15 years and don’t really know what my body’s normal cycle is.

It can vary a huge amount, impossible to know really until you try. But it would be reasonable to expect a few months before cycles return to normal after being on it for 15 years. More likely if any pre-existing issues ie. irregular cycles, PCOS etc.
You could consider stopping it and using barrier methods while you get to know your cycles.

Yes that’s what I’m thinking... just get it out of my system first and then start trying. We’ve just moved house so we’re in no rush but at the same time we’ve been together a long time (nearly 10yrs) and feel we are ready to become a family.

I was advised to come off it 6 months before trying by my doctor I then got pregnant the month after I came off it! I'd been taking it for over 8 years. I would allow your body time to get it out 6months ish but bare in mind you could get pregnant sooner so use protection if you don't want to or it could take alot longer xx

EEB1989 · 06/07/2018 08:39

Thank you everyone. I'm due an appointment at the doctors to talk about my pill, so Ill mention it to them and most likely come off of it and use other methods until we're ready.
Thank you again

I too have been on cilest for about 15 years @AmazingBouncingFerret I'm hoping to come off the pill at the end of the month. Strange question but if we were hoping to conceive straight away, would it be best to DTD straight away? Or did you wait until you thought you were ovulating? I guess it's pretty tricky when you first come off it it to know.

xJune88 · 07/07/2018 18:19

@pastaallday we started having sex straight away and didn't 'try' the first month and I got pregnant straight away. Didn't manage to get past 7 weeks but it can be done! Your cycles might be totally bonkers though you could ovulate straight away or might even miss a month x

Hi there- I have had a different experience coming off cilest than some of the other ladies here. I was on the pill (different ones but mostly cilest) for c.12 years. I came off it last aug/sept (after our wedding and honeymoon) and we started TTC from Dec. We have just had cycle 7 of TTC and still nothing 😔 The other thing is that although my periods appear to be regular, they are extremely light (sorry if TMI but so light that I barely need a tampon). I was really worried about this and thought it might be the reason why I can't get pregnant and have tried so many things to get a more heavier period from herbal medicines, acupuncture and arvigo massage. Had blood tests done and all appear to be fine. I don't know for a fact if this is the reason I'm not yet pregnant but IMO I would come off the pill sooner rather than later (I wish I had). Having said that, one of my closest friends came off hers and got pregnant first month of trying. So different experiences for different people. Wishing you the best of luck!

I went on cilest when I was 14. I came off at 22 when my then husband and I decided we wanted children. I was young and didn’t put much thought into it, literally just didn’t carry on taking it after my monthly break and started shagging lots.
This is just how it happened for me though, I’m sure it can and would be different for others.

rm15 · 08/07/2018 17:54

I was on Cilest for around 11 years. Took me 13months to have a single period and being ttc for the last 10 months with no success. However, cycles were all over the place and they seem to be settling now at the 40ish days mark so I'm seeing that as a positive! Good luck

Pastaallday · 08/07/2018 18:04

Seems like it really does depend on as h person! I'm hoping, like one poster above, that it happens straight away. I spent the whole of my teens and twenties trying not to get pregnant but you never know until you actually start trying how hard it'll be I guess! Good luck to everyone trying xx

EEB1989 · 08/07/2018 21:41

Gosh I didn’t expect everyone to be different. Rm15 do you mind me asking if you had withdrawals after each pill packet as usual or where your cycles always all over the place? I can’t remember the last time I had a natural cycle. I’ve been on this pill since 14 because my cycles where crazy. Thank you everyone for your advice and good look to everyone who’s trying x

rm15 · 09/07/2018 07:58

Hi,
I had a 7 day break between packets and I could set my clock for how regular they were!
I went on the pill because I had quite heavy/ painful af.
As you say everyone is different. I now have clear hormonal changes throughout my cycle so I think somethings happening!

keepingbees · 09/07/2018 08:47

I was on cilest for years and got pregnant on the first cycle I stopped taking it.
As others have said it's different for everyone and there are lots of factors to getting pregnant, but from a pill point of view, it is possible to get pregnant quickly even if you've been on it for years.

Waitingonasmiley42 · 09/07/2018 08:52

I was on cilest and got pregnant on cycle 11 off the pill and cycle 8 tracking ovulation. My cycles were about 45 days and never became regular.

AWhistlingWoman · 09/07/2018 09:46

I took Cilest for eleven years. Fell pregnant first cycle off with twins. Good luck.
