Early 8 week scan... opinions?

Hi all... thinking of booking an early 8 weeks scan... our first pregnancy ended in a missed miscarriage at 10.5 weeks... baby had stopped growing at 6. So you can imagine my nerves & anxiety...
would you recommend going for an early scan?
I know anything can happen up to 12 weeks, but I don't think I can bare to wait all that time without driving myself insane!

I'm in a similar situation. My first pregnancy ended in a missed miscarriage in April. I thought I was 12 weeks but a scan revealed baby had stopped developing at 6.

I just found out last week that I'm pregnant again. Utterly ecstatic but terrified of another miscarriage. I've booked an early scan for when I'm eight weeks. As I've 'only' had one miscarriage I couldn't be offered a scan on the NHS, so had to book it privately.

I'm only four weeks at the moment, so need to survive the next four weeks without driving myself mad with worry Grin

Good luck! x

@CobaltRose oh wow congrats. We sadly lost ours in Feb... felt like I took us forever to get pregnant again (even thought it was 2 months shorter than last time)...
it's such a mixture of emotions isn't it? I feel like it's taken a lot of the excitement away.. as I'm constantly panicking! I think I'm gonna book one for the weekend we turn 8 weeks.

I keep googling everything & some say to wait but I really don't think I can... praying so hard everything is fine this time around 💛

@aj1617, I know exactly what you mean. I'm overjoyed I'm pregnant again, but must admit my previous miscarriage has taken some of the joy out of it. I don't want to get too attached just in case the same thing happens Sad

We feel quite lucky to have conceived again so quickly (then again my previous pregnancy was conceived first time trying!) and hopefully this one sticks! I'm a ball of nerves, but trying to keep in mind that there's really nothing I can do to prevent miscarriage. I'm taking each day as it comes.

Good luck and congrats to you too! Flowers

I had an early scan because I couldn't wait another second to see baby!
Reassured me in the sense that I heard heartbeat and saw baby move... was thrilled.

THEN however, I went for nhs scan at 8.5weeks and they were just SO much more thorough with everything, and checked a lot more things about baby's health etc. Unexpectedly even the NHS scan pic was better too!!

Just my experience xx

CobaltRose · 02/07/2018 20:56

I called my local EPU about getting a scan on the NHS and was told they only offered early scans to women who had had at least three miscarriages Sad

aj1617 · 02/07/2018 21:42

Congrats @lolacola13 💛💛

@CobaltRose yes I asked if I could get early scan at doctors & he said no straight up! I'm thinking of booking with ultrasound direct.. there all over the country & have got really good reviews!
I'm not too fussed if I don't see all little details, just want peace of mind that our little bub is all ok in there!
Good luck to you all ✨✨✨

It may be worth looking at EPU nearby - they will differ. Ours offer a daily walk in for anyone who’s concerned to go and get a scan up until 12 weeks - it’s amazing really. (I imagine they’d tel you to go away if you started to take the p*ss!!) but I went a couple of times in my last pregnancy when I had a bit of bleeding etc. So look at the other places you can access. X

After having an early mc in Feb too, when we found out we were expecting again my dp actually offered to pay for a reassurance scan. Although I'm still nervous for the 12 week scan, and fully aware something could still go wrong - knowing implantation had happened and we had a heartbeat is SO reassuring and I genuinely would have driven myself crazy without it.

Melamine · 02/07/2018 23:05

I had a mmc at 11.5 in April too, baby stopped at 6-7 weeks. I’ll definitely have an 8 week scan next time as while it changes nothing, if a problem is found at 8, at least I won’t spend another month thinking everything is ok! Good luck OP

BoBo90 · 03/07/2018 06:53

I miscarried at 8 weeks with my first pregnancy so with the second I paid for a scan at 8 weeks and 11 weeks! It really put my mind at ease 😊 I would definitely recommend. My only warning would be that dating is not very accurate that early so don't be shocked or upset if they say baby is 5 or so days earlier than you thought. I had this with the 8 week scan and was a little worried but by the 12 week scan the dates matched perfectly with ov.
Good luck and wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy 😊

SamSmithYawnsWhenHeSings · 03/07/2018 07:08

I would recommend it for reassurance. If there is a heart beat at 8 weeks the chance of miscarriage goes down to 2% which I had not realised.

12 weeks is such a long time to know everything is ok so an interim scan can help you to relax until then.

Muffin7 · 03/07/2018 07:23

Wow, I didn't know that fact about miscarriage after seeing a heartbeat. I had an early miscarriage in March and am now 6 weeks pregnant again, we've already booked an early scan which I will have the day before I am 8 weeks. A friend recommended a local company who do early scans for £69, which seemed a reasonable price to help me relax a little.

aj1617 · 03/07/2018 08:20

Thanks for all your replies!

Yes I think then it drops to 1% after 9 weeks (something like that)

I've just turned 6 weeks which is when baby stopped developing last time so I'm a nervous wreck.. constantly checking my boobs still hurt & symptom checking. It's awful.
I don't really have many symptoms either at this stage? Does anyone else?

I'm gonna wait to see gp tomorrow then I'm gonna book scan.. will be 1/2 days before I'm 8 weeks so hope that will be ok! Xx

@aj1617 I'm 6wks and the only symptoms I am are complete and utter exhaustion and nausea. I feel exactly like I did with my two other children, except maybe more tired but I do have 2 under 3 to run around after.

aj1617 · 03/07/2018 20:08

@Muffin7 It panics me not having many symptoms but I am only 6 weeks there's still time. I do feel tired but we've just got back from a long haul flight so could just be that. X
