TTC whilst breastfeeding

So I know lots of people might think I'm mad, but DH and I want to start TTC our second baby. Our DD is 6 months. She's a nightmare sleeper so we're both exhausted, but hey ho. It took us two years and the loss of a baby before we finally had her. We're worried it will take that long again.

I've not gone back on contraception. I'm breast feeding, but not as often now that we've started weaning. My periods are still a little out of whack. Sometimes 28 days, sometimes 31. Anyone know how BF affects fertility. My GP said it's unlikely I'll ovulate, but I've heard lots of women catching early

I got periods back at 4 weeks, 4-6 weeks between them, got pregnant when she was 6 months but didn't test positive until a week after I was 'due on' so mustve still been an irregular 5 week cycle.

I was probably more fertile than usual though as DD was a 28 weeker so I wasn't expressing during the night at points to begin with and she was on very small amounts/nil by mouth at times so the first 3 months I wasn't making anywhere near the amount of milk, or as regular as a term baby would drink.

Thanks. My period came back at around 3 months. I'm still doing maybe 5 feeds a day, but they're more like snacks as she doesn't seem to take much at all now she's having food. Congrats on your babies. X

I got pregnant with DC2 when DC1 was six months & I was still breastfeeding. It was a bit of a surprise as it took almost a year to conceive DC1. The small age gap has been really lovely, they've always been close.

There's a small age gap between my sister and I and it's lovely. I know the early years will be hard, but I think it'll be worth it.

I would assume now your periods have returned that your likely to be ovulating either now or soon. My first DD is 4 years older and my periods didn't return for 8 months after her, so them coming back at 3 months and her feeding less is a good sign that your hormone levels are going back to normal Smile.

Good luck I hope it happens for you soon!

I'm in a similar position. My baby is 7 months. I had a period just before he turned six months but my cycle was 42 days long so a bit longer than normal 28 day cycle and I think ovulated twice (?) ( not sure about this if possible but I peed on stick and it tested positive when period was supposed to come and assumed I had already ovulated. )

Just finished second period and I'm wondering if ttc or need to see if my period becomes more regular...

Good luck xxx

I'm breastfeeding and my periods came back at around 5 months. DS2 is 17 months now and only feeding 2-3 times a day. I've been tracking my temps for a few months and have been ovulating.
It's definitely possible while breastfeeding and even more likely when baby starts solids or sleeps for longer stretches.
Good luck!
