It's only been 3 weeks, we advise ladies it can take 3 months sometimes longer before getting into a regular cycle, after a copper coil your periods will likely get heavier, longer and sometimes more "crampy" this is the first thing I say to those wishing a coil, did the fitting service not tell you this before hand? What you are experiencing is pretty normal at this point I would say. Your bleeding will be heavier though its a downside of non hormonal contraception x

Hi my doctor didn't really explain it to me she just said your period might be a bit heavier.
They have give me mefenamic acid doctor said it will lightin my period but I haven't seen any improvement yet
I can't take anything with hormone
I'm just a bit worried over the bleeding
Because the 2 doctors I have seen haven't give me any reassurance that's it's normal
Thank you for your reply xx

I had quite heavy unusual bleeding for about 6 weeks after I had my first copper coil fitted. It did take a bit to settle I would say. I had heavy periods and I would say they were more painful than normal for a few months but then it was like my body went - oh yeah! This is fine. And I’ve had one for the last 10 years apart from when I had DS. I think they are great, but if you’re worried it’s probably a good idea to speak to the family planning nurse - they might have a bit more specialised info than the GP

With the copper coil, my periods went from 3-4 days of medium bleeding to up to 10 day murder fests. It was a gradual process for me over the five years I had it in.

Jacquelinemcg2013 · 16/06/2018 21:49

Lol this is such a shock to me I know I might be over reacting but I use 2 get my period 3-4 days and they were very light to now I have them 8 days today
I no what the doctor is going to tell me to stick it out for a few months but I really hate this bleeding I feel if I'm cleaning up or sorting babies out a gush of blood coming out of me 🙈🙈

That's a bit naughty of them! I wouldn't be to concerned with bleeding at this point, your uterus will be furious it's had something put in it! What were your periods like before having the copper coil? If they were heavy before you might find them even worse, I'd give it much more time, the good thing is you can always have it removed, but def go to a contraceptive service it's their speciality.

Racecardriver · 16/06/2018 21:51

I had brown discharge for two weeks then my period and then it stopped.

Lymphy · 16/06/2018 21:52

Murder fest 😂😂

Wallywobbles · 16/06/2018 21:52

4.5 years on. I'm more regular than before but have 2 very heavy days. Periods last 5-8 days, its fine.

Lymphy · 16/06/2018 21:58

it will be a shock to go from light bleeds to longer heavier bleeds, I don't blame you for feeling that way, what other methods have you tried before (I work in contraception not just being a nosy cow BTW 😂)

Jacquelinemcg2013 · 16/06/2018 22:14

Ya big shock lol my period was a bit heavy 1st day and after that fine before I got coil in

I only tryed the injection and a few different pills but that was years ago I remember I use to get bad pains in my head and black outs

But just after my last baby doctor put me on the mini pill and I got so depressed as soon as I stop taken it I was a different person
Doctor thinks I should keep away from anything with hormone in it which I agree x

If you can persevere longer I would, it'll likely settle into a pattern the fact your previous periods were quite light is good. If not then talk to someone about the mirena coil, it has hormone but minimal amounts, the hormone is localised to the uterus so not flying around your whole system like with a pill or injection, so might actually be a good option for you as the theory is you shouldn't experience hormonal side effects (there are always those who do though), you'll hear good and bad about all contraception but it really is trial an error to find something to suit, give it a bit longer if you can though

Jacquelinemcg2013 · 16/06/2018 22:37

Thank you so much it's nice to get some kind of reassurance
I will see how the next few days goes I'm a bit nervous about the the coil with the hormone in
Lol I just might not use anything and put my husband in the spare room 😂😂 joke....
I don't think men appreciate us woman enough x I will keep u updated on how I get on
