Clearblue OPK so confused?

Okay, so we've been TTC for the past few months now, had an early miscarriage in march so my cycle's been a bit all over the place since so decided to start using the clearblue OPK's so I actually have some idea when I'm likely to ovulate.

I'm just using the bog standard ones that detect 2 most fertile days not the flashing smiley ones. But I am so confused?! I typically have a 31/32 day cycle, so I started testing on day 13. I got my first smiley face on cycle day 18 which was Sunday, I know your supposed to stop testing after your first smiley but curiosity got he better of me so I took another on Monday, got another smiley face, thought nothing of it, just assumed I was probs due to ovulate later that day, then this morning I took another test got a negative, and then just because I have a mild addiction to peeing on sticks 🙈 I did another this afternoon and got a smiley face?? What on earth is going on here? I am so confused, especially considering the fact this is now day 20 of my cycle and I really thought I'd have ovulated by now? Also ive had zero symptoms? No cramps, no egg white CM? I just don't get it?

I haven’t used the Clear Blue ones (only internet cheapies) so don’t know if there are any problems perculiar to them, but you can have more than one LH surge a cycle.
Perhaps your body was gearing up but didn’t actually ovulate and now it’s happening a few days later?

Hopefully someone with Clear Blue experience will be along!

I have a feeling it compares your LH levels to the previous reading and if it’s much higher it gives you smiley. So maybe on day 18 you had a surge and it went up again on Monday, then maybe you tested with more dilute urine hence the negative, and then this afternoon your LH was stronger than the dilute one so gave you the smiley? I think the reason they tell you to stop is because it is comparing to the previous result - and I think that’s why they tell you to test at the same time of day so the dilution should be roughly the same? I am semi making this up but this is how I understand them to work!
I would buy some one step ones off amazon too and use them as well so you can compare the readings (plus they’re much cheaper so you can pee to your hearts content!)
