I had a surgical termination at 9 weeks a year ago - will it affect any future pregnancies?

I have four children who were all conceived quickly.

My DP has no children but he was the father of the baby we terminated :(

Thanks x

Hello , once the procedure was properly done then you should have no problems trying to conceive. Read more about this by clicking below:

Medically no, as a surgical procedure abortion is very safe and should have no effect on possible future conception or pregnancy.

I had a surgical termination 3 years ago. Previously conceived twice before on the pill. My partner was the father of the baby I had terminated also. We have now been actively ttc for 19 months with no luck. So yes, it’s very possible. It can also have no effect. It really just depends on how “lucky” you are. I haven’t been lucky sadly (despite all fertility tests being fine) but considering I fell pregnant so easily before the surgery and cannot get pregnant after it, logically it seems it’s most likely the termination that has somehow affected my fertility. Hopefully you won’t have the same misfortune. I didn’t want to have the termination at all and it is a horrible thing to know that that could well have been my last chance at having a child x

Thank you - that's reassuring!

Oh Bubblegum :( I hope it works out for you. What was the reason for the termination, if you don't mind me asking? Did you have your children very young?

I conceived at 18, 21, 22, 25 and 27 and am 29 soon x

I had my DD when I was 19 (different partner) Got pregnant with my second when I was 25. I wanted to keep it, my partner didn’t. After lots of fighting, I felt like I had no choice but to terminate. I have never ever got over it and now not being able to get pregnant when my fertility was fine previously is the worst thing that could ever have happened to me.

Surgery on a recently pregnant uterus can cause scar tissue also, it’s rare but a risk. I know of 2 other people who had a surgical termination in the past and both weren’t able to get pregnant again, one had to do IVF and the other adopted. Like I said, it’s rare that it will effect your fertility but there IS a risk that it will, I’m living proof that it can. I’m sure you’ll be fine though :)

ive had a termination and have had zero issues getting pregnant since.
Youre more likely to get issues from childbirth than a termination

That sounds awful :(

We are the other way round in that my DP was desperate to keep and really wants to TTC. I had such bad morning sickness and we'd only been together five months. Would be just my luck if it didn't happen now we are (almost) married, together a lot longer, have our own house etc!

I didn't think of it like that Bran. I've been very lucky then!

Try not to worry too much. The majority of people who have a surgical termination go on to have more pregnancies without a problem. I’ve just drawn the short straw. Someone has to I guess! Good luck
