Overweight and TTC

Just wondered if anyone else is a bit overweight (BMI 30+) and TTC but worried that they're doing the wrong thing, that that they should wait until they've lost weight and concerned about losing weight while/once they are pregnant?

Having a moment where I'm too much in my head!

My BMI is just under 30 (how did that happen?!) but yeah I feel the same.

I have been trying to lose some weight (still am) for my own health, but I am struggling if I’m honest. I might have to do slimming world again after Easter.

I think if you wait until you’ve lost the weight, you’ll never actually do anything (this applies in all areas, not just pregnancy) so I’m cracking on regardless. I am trying to eat a bit better though, as I feel this matters the most.

My BMI is reading at 40 at the moment (5"11 and hovering between 19-20st) and I'm TTC but I considered everything before I made the decision to TTC. It boiled down to a few things for me:

  • To lose enough weight to get me to a healthy BMI (25) it would take 2 years - 2 years pushes our timeline a little in terms of conceiving as ideally we'd like 2 and with a decent age gap (I know I can't plan everything but in an ideal world!)
  • Despite my BMI I'm otherwise relatively fit & healthy. My blood pressure actually sits too low and I've got no other health issues. I walk at least 5 miles per day and go swimming 3 times a week and my diet is generally balanced.
  • Most importantly, I read everything I could about the risks, and have accepted slightly higher risks for various different ailments throughout pregnancy.

I think you have to weigh up the risks vs benefits. To me, I didn't want to wait to start TTC until i'd lost the weight and then regret waiting if I couldn't get pregnant within 12 months. I will be attempting to lose weight before BFP and then will keep a super close eye on weight gain during pregnancy!

Me too. I'm 13st11 and 5.3 so around 4 stone overweight. I'm giving myself until September to lose a bit weight. I'm not on a diet but I'm eating healthier and doing more exercise. I want to be healthy and my blood pressure is a little high just now. I also don't want to look like a balloon after the baby is born. Will see what happens but can't put it off too long.
