Should I drink alcohol on holiday?

Hi there everyone,

I've just joined Mumsnet :-)

I'm off on holidays tomorrow and I haven't been on holidays for years. So, I'd love to relax and enjoy good food and a few drinks etc. I'm a chef, so the idea of going to restaurants and being fed and enjoying wine sounds like heaven to me...

However, I've started TTC. So, my period is due in a week's time and technically I could be pregnant. What have you done/would you do in this situation? I don't want to drink on holiday in the knowledge I'm damaging a growing baby BUT I'm also aware that it's not that likely I'm pregnant since we've only been trying for a few months...and haven't really tried hard enough yet due to crazy conflicting work schedules.

What do you think? I'd appreciate any advice from people who've been in this situation. Thanks a million. :-)

When I’m in this situation I still have a drink but just don’t go wild!

So two glasses of wine instead of five cocktails (Not that I ever have more than one or two drinks now I have dc anyway, the hangover isn’t worth it!) you can’t put your life on hold. I would start taking folic acid however, if you aren’t already that is.

Drink until it’s pink! If you think there’s a chance then maybe don’t get completely trollied, but since a fertilised egg doesn’t implant for a week-ish and doesnt share your bloodstream for weeks after that, it really doesn’t harm anything.

NewSparkle · 25/03/2018 19:58

Have a few drinks & enjoy yourself. Be better not to go nuts but a few won’t hurt. And the relaxation should help the TTC , good luck!

flumpybear · 25/03/2018 20:06

Enjoy your holiday, don't worry even if you are pregnant then the blastocyst will be rolling down the Fallopian tube heading towards the uterus now, implantation happens around due date of period

Keep hydrated and don't be vomitingly drunken and you'll be fine

I actually feel this post was written by me. I too am off on holidays tomorrow with AF due on 4th after only trying for a few months.
I literally have nobody to ask as family etc don't know we are TTC yet. I was thinking the same things as you and tried to consult Dr Google with so many different outcomes!

I'm going to have a drink but no go wild - main aim is to try and relax!

Enjoy your holiday Thanks

I had a similar dilemma at Christmas. I decided to carry on drinking but just kept an eye on how much I was drinking and did try to limit this more than I would have normally. In the end I wasn’t pregnant so I’m glad I enjoyed Christmas and would have regretted missing out on some good nights out with friends/family. Not sure how I would have felt if it did turn out I was pregnant tho but I took the advice - drink until it’s pink as it’s very unlikely anything would happen at this very early stage anyway. Enjoy your holiday Wine

If you're due in a week it's possible that if you're pregnant you might get a positive in the next few days. If i was in this position I'd take some early response tests with me x

Rundemlegs · 25/03/2018 20:50

Relax, enjoy and drink, drink, drink!

hoping2018 · 25/03/2018 22:42

NICE guidelines are 1-2 units 1-2 times per week when trying to conceive.

I stick to that after ovulation and before preg test and have

I actually found out I was (very unexpectedly) pregnant the morning after a big, tequila-soaked night out and a fairly civilised glass of wine a night habit. When I saw my GP and confessed he said not to worry about it, the embryo only takes nourishment from its yolk sac until weeks later, so no transfer of toxins. He did tell me to pack in the boozing from here on in though, obviously! Blush Clearly not suggesting you go loopy on margaritas like me but it would seem that you can have a few indulgent meals out on your hols with no ill effects if it does turn out that you're pregnant!

Bubblegum89 · 26/03/2018 15:58

Yes

FingersXssd83 · 26/03/2018 16:18

Currently on holiday and cycle 9 for us TTC #1.

Up to this point I wouldn't have drank but thought fuck it, and enjoyed a few each night (1-3)!

The longer you try I think you relax into it more.

Good luck! X

@Clarab0w - I came on this thread looking for reassurance as this is exactly the situation I am in. Found out I'm pregnant after two big nights out which were between conception and the BFP. I do feel very guilty about the booze but tried to rationalise that there is no shared blood supply until later, which your post backs up, so thanks for sharing.
To the OP In hindsight I really wish I had reined it in and not had those two big nights out but I wouldn't regret a glass of wine or two with dinner until you know for sure.

Clarab0w · 27/03/2018 11:28

@rideforthehills I know what you mean - I'd obviously have felt horrific if anything had gone wrong, but the doctor assured me that the embryo is totally independent of maternal bloodstream etc (95% sure he said until around 7 weeks pregnant?) so it wouldn't make a difference and he even told me not to beat myself up about it! Very kind.

The tequila baby is due any day now, so fingers crossed he doesn't come out wearing a sombrero...

happymummy12345 · 27/03/2018 11:37

Id have the drinks and enjoy yourself. A lot of people probably drink in the first few weeks of pregnancy, before they actually realise or know for sure.
I drank while ttc. Having said that I drank during my pregnancy as well. Way less than usual and weaker drinks (weak spirits and mixers or wine topped up with lemonade), but I don't see what harm a few does really.

Slundle · 02/04/2018 11:13

Hi ladies!

Thanks so much for all of your input. I just got back today & I enjoyed my holiday & drinks for sure! I read your posts just before the flight took off & was reassured! I still haven't got my period and it's due today but I've a feeling I'll get it! Illogical as it is, I imagine it happening when I'm expecting it less/thinking about it less! I might lay off the gargle from now until my period comes though! Halo

All the best.
