conceiving while on the pill ... ?

New to mumsnet, so apologies if this duplicates a gazillion earlier threads ...

dp and I are deep in discussions of when to begin trying for our first baby, but I'm slightly concerned that the question may be academic now. I forgot to take my pill for a couple of days earlier this month and didn't think much of it - I've done it before. However - a week or so later - tender and swollen breasts and general feeling-oddness have suddenly led me to wonder ...

Just after a spot of advice, really. Does anyone know of anyone who's got pregnant while on the pill? Would my continuing to take the pill have any adverse effect on the putative child? And can one test for pregnancy while taking the pill?

It wouldn't be a total disaster if I were to be pregnant, as it's really a matter of when not if (though the timing isn't ideal) - so any and all anecdotes/advice appreciated!

Taking the pill won't harm the baby, but you should do a pregnancy test ASAP so that you can stop taking it if you are pregnant.

Being on the pill won't affect the pregnancy test result.

i got pg while not taking the pill very well, iykwim! it doesn't have an adverse effect on the baby and you can take a pg test while on it.
like yourselves, we fancied having a baby at some point and i got a bit blase about pill taking. best thing that ever happened to us though as lovely baby with no "trying". take your folic acid though...

Both my dc's were concieved on the odd missed pill. No ill effects at all just stopped taking it when did a test.

And yes you can do a pg test while on the pill... But wait til at least two weeks after missed pill to be sure that you don't get a false negative test. And as far as I know there is no real risk to any baby from the contraceptive pill, but could be wrong on this.

i fell pregnant on the pill.was only 18 and been on it for two years,missed a pill and must have conceived then.i hadn't realised until i was 22weeks though so had taken the pill all that time.
ds was born at 41weeks,8lb 3oz very healthy.he is now nearly 8 and i have had no problems at all with him. hth

gosh, am suddenly wracked with nerves!

Two of my work colleagues got pg last year while on the pill. Both continued to take the pill for a few months until they realised wtih no ill effects. BUT, do a test ASAP!!!

sorry - missed the other posts - very reassuring to hear that taking the pill doesn't have an adverse effect. I think it's only been about a week and a half, so may wait until the weekend to test (and lay off the booze until then). Nicky, that sounds about right - blase pretty much sums it up ...

good grief - reading all these, can't believe I managed to make it so many years WITHOUT conceiving on the pill ..

LOL!! can't beleive you didn't know already that when ttc you should be on the pill!!

hmmn, well. I got one, but it seems as I'd be testing way early I should wait until morning ... So I'll do it then. I'll keep you posted!
