ive been waiting for af so i can book in for a hsg but the only appts they can offer are on the 21st or 22nd of may when we are on hol. ive just read an article that says it has to be done BEFORE ov, my period started on sat, i have a 29 day cycle so i will ov on the 20th, am i being thick here or should the nurse have taken this into consideration?

Hi Lissie
They have to be certain you are not pg before the HSG - we had to abstain and they did a pg test as my previous. period was a bit scant (or I was paranoid - which is much more likely).
Hope this helps. (By the way my HSG was ok - uncomfortable while it was done - but no pain once over... except the next period was more painful)
Choc

Oh Lissie what a bloody nightmare!!! I remember complaining bitterly about my HSG appointment as they gave me one cancellation date which didn't fit into my cycle or I would have to wait until July which was months away for me at the time. Mine had to be between day 5 and I think day 13-15 depending on the unit. I remember thinking .....if my AF was one day late I wouldn't be able to have it done. They told me to work out my dates and that if it wasn't possible then to phone back and cancel. Like chocolate days says, they have to ensure you are not pregnant so they try and get it done before ovulation and grill you about when you last had sex etc. Some units are far more flexible and I seem to remember Cedar phoned up on day 1 of cycle and they gave her a date, mine were shite and said they didn't have enough medics nor appoints to do that

Hi lissielou,

Have never come across anything stating that a HSG needs to be done before ovulation. What article was this?.

I would not assume that you ovulated on day 20 if your cycle is of 29 days. Its all too easy to get the date wrong. It can be that a person ovulated earlier, later or not at all in any given cycle.

I would speak with them and see if you can have the HSG either early in the cycle or in mid cycle.

The HSG should not be painful providing the dye is injected slowly and carefully. You should also be given painkillers beforehand. Bring a sanitary towel along with you as well, that dye will seep out.

hi attila here it is! they dont have a earlier appt and later will be too close to my next period. my cycle is v regular and i always ov right on schedule. but she didnt even ask about my cycle length etc, which i found quite odd.

Give them a ring Lissie - they'll explain it to you. I was told I needed to come between day 5 1n 15 only. Yes as Atilla says take some brufren beforehand, I did. They gave me a little packet with a spongue, sanitory towel and antibiotics to go home with after.
