TTC and Singapore advice

Hello everyone,

I was hoping there may be some people out there to give me some advice, particularly any Singapore MNetters!

I am travelling to Singapore with my husband soon as we are looking to move out there and we are currently TTC... I am aware that Singapore is at risk of Zika and this is obviously giving me a LOT of anxiety. I know couples are advised not to TTC for 6 months after visiting a country at threat.

Does anyone have any first hand knowledge or experience of current situation in Singapore? Were you pregnant in Singapore? Are you TTC in Singapore?

Or any Zika advice would be appreciated in general.

Thanks :-)

Hi I have a number of friends who moved out to Singapore in the past few years and I actually just went to visit them. I can vouch that there isn't a Zika problem in Singapore. Though there was a scare a few months to a year back, my friends who were pregnant during the time went about their days as usual and didn't seem to be too worried (and for the record, their babies were born totally healthy!). Just take usual precautions (use insect repellent) and you'll be fine. Singapore is a great place that has good schools, great healthcare and is very child friendly - you and your husband will have a blast! If you want, I can put you in touch with my friends in Singapore too.

Hi livyw1 thanks very much for your reply! I have heard Singapore is a wonderful place to live so can't wait to check it out. You have put my mind at rest a bit. When you go online it says to AVOID Singapore so I have assumed it is just as bad as Brazil / South America etc..

We are visiting next month, so are already concerned about TTC and what we will do on our return. I am seeing my Dr next week to discuss the situation but concerned he will give me the usual info that I can read online which advises not to travel to Singapore or if we do, to not have unprotected sex for 6 months after. I'd just really like some actual information based on Singapore and not a generic response.

We are going to use Deet insect repellent and try to avoid any areas we feel may be a little more mosquito concentrated but there is only so much we can do really as we obviously want to enjoy our time there and not stay inside!

If we end up moving there we will have no choice in the matter - we will be TTC whilst living in Singapore, like so many other people!

I know it's hard to advise from the outside in on something as sensitive as this but I would take warnings with a pinch of salt - especially if the relocation is going to happen anyway. There have been no cases of birth defects in Singapore linked to Zika and it is possible to go about most days without being bitten by a mosquito. Hopefully this makes the prospect of the move a teeny bit less stressful!
