Hey all

I'm new to this site so not sure if I'm doing this properly but here goes.

I'm currently on the mini pill since having my little girl and it's been about 7 months. I'm having an awful time on it. My period hasn't stopped its very light but I think I've only had about a week or 2 off it. My mood swings are unbareable also so I've been told to get the coil but for some reason the whole procedure and thought of it terrifies me. Has anyone had it before and able to give me any good reviews? Or bad I don't mind haha.

You might be better off posting this in the family planning section or asking MN to move this over to that section.

However, I had a copper coil for 8 years. The insertion was pretty painful and I had a few days of seriously bad cramps. I'd not had children though and its supposed to be better if you've given birth. While the insertion was bad it was bearable and I got 8 years of no-think contraception for the few moments of horrendous pain and few days of super cramps. It was worth the trade off for me. Having it taken out was one tiny half second of soreness which went away instantly. I was able to have sex the next day!

I don't know much about the mirena coil but the insertion is likely to be pretty similar.

Thanks for the reply! It does sound so much better than what I'm on just now. I had a section so might still be painful but I guess it's worth it in the end!!

I had the mirena for 4 years. Insertion was no worse than a smear, didn’t really get any cramping afterwards and didn’t have periods for 4 years! I’d recommend :)

Hello,
I would also recommend the Mirena. It was fantastic! No periods, not painful to have inserted or removed, just felt a bit of cramp really!
I also like the fact that you aren't switching off your ovaries, just making it difficult for sperm to get in. Also the fact that it's a much lower dose of hormone than the pill, so I didn't get any of the hormone issues I had while on the pill.

I’ve had two mirena coils, they were brilliant. Progressively lighter periods for the first six months then nothing for the next five years. Having it put in was no worse than a smear, had some crampy period-type pains for a day or two afterwards but they soon settled down. I had side effects with the implant (bad acne, mood swings) but no problems at all with the mirena.
