Conceiving after stopping the pill BUT before having a period

Hello all. I’m just looking for some feedback from others who may have been in similar situations and who wouldn’t mind sharing their experiences.
I was on the combined pill for 12 Years (17-29). I am married since June and in November, my husband and I made the decision casually to stop using contraception. We weren’t trying to conceive as such, more “stopping trying to prevent”.
Since coming off the pill I’ve had my withdrawal bleed but that’s it. No “natural” period. I’m wondering, is it possible to conceive without having a “natural” period? I thought having one would mean my body was ovulating. Now that it’s been so long without a period I’m just asking some questions.
We have been having sex and in the last week or so I have been having some mild nausea, slight cramping etc. Nothing major. Has anyone here been in a similar situation and wouldn’t mind sharing their thoughts/experiences?
Thank you all so much.

It’s possible to get pregnant before having a proper period, yes. It’s also possible to not have your period come back for a while after stopping hormonal birth control. Best thing to do is take a test. If it’s negative, then I’m afraid it’s just a waiting game. Your body can take up to a year to get back into a natural rythmn after coming off contraception

Same boat @Sally52014 (finished Yasmin in Nov), albeit cycle seems to have returned to normal immediately - usual withdrawal bleed within a few days then normal period +28 days (very half arsed attempts in Dec!)

Definitely possible to conceive before first normal period; the first proper period sheds an embedded egg - so if that first released egg post-pill happened to meet a friendly swimmer along the way and you're lucky then job's a good'un! Happens to plenty. Only downside is slightly harder to date the pregnancy / predict due date.

That said, there are loooads of people who take several months post pill for cycles to return to any kind of predictability, i.e. knowing when ovulating / in fertile window / TWW etc. Not to say they aren't conceiving, but it's more of a stab in the dark (couldn't resist Wink) without knowing what's what in your cycle.

Best bet might be a test to put your mind at ease either way, if BFN then bide your time til AF shows, and start counting from there - at least at that point you have a cycle day 1, and can record length etc. Have been using Glow app to track things - few other apps getting good feedback too - and it definitely helps if period math is all a bit unknown. Good luck to you!

Oh, hahahaha - what @Bubblegum89 said Grin

I was on the pill from age 17 - 28. I took about 6 months from coming off the pill to having a real period. But then I didn’t have another period for a few months and then I fell pregnant. So I only had that one period, months before falling pregnant! Had to go for a dating scan because of this.

I went back on the pill after birth of DC and the exact same thing happened the second time we tried to conceive.

Yep. I came off the pill after our honeymoon at the end of April. Had no sign of a period and in August took pregnancy test 'just in case,' which was positive! Turned out I was only about 5 or 6 weeks by that point. It's definitely possible Smile

HirplesWithHaggis · 05/01/2018 02:23

I did. Married, mortgaged etc, DH and I thought, yeah, why not? Couple of weeks later I got cold feet and said I'd go back on the pill after my next period, which was how mine was taken.

Except my next period was about a year later. DS1 is 30 now. Grin

Pregnancy tests are much more reliable and you can test waaay earlier than back then. Go get one done!

@Sally52014

Hi, I am in a similar situation. I'm 28 and TTC my first. I stopped taking cerelle the mini pill on 11th December (I did not have any periods on this pill)

It's nearly 4 weeks since I stopped the pill and DTD lots over last few weeks. Only symptoms I've had is very tender and heavy boobs and this week is a sore lower back. No idea where I am regarding my cycle or ovulation.

I plan on testing mid Jan about the 15th if no AF before then. Been taking pre-pregnancy supplements too. X

Yep happened to my friend came of the pill didn't have a proper period and got caught first try xx

twobambinos · 05/01/2018 09:48

The same happened me on my first dd. Stopped yasmin had the withdrawal bleed and a month later a bfp. So it is possible

cupcakesandglitter · 05/01/2018 10:25

I had my implant out in August, didn't have a proper period until October, and my cycles are all over the place now - we've TTC but it's not happened yet, don't think my body is settled after contraception yet x

LondonStill83 · 05/01/2018 10:28

Yup- happened to me!

Many women become hyper fertile after coming off contraception so definitely POAS!

endoflevelbaddy · 05/01/2018 11:01

Happened to me with DD2. First time I'd come off Yasmin to TTC DD1 periods came back after a couple of months but were irregular - conceived 6 months after stopping.

With DD2 I had no period for 6 months after stopping, did a test which was -ve so went to GP to ask advice. Started a whole lot of tests to check everything was ok but started to feel nauseous before results came in and had a BFP.

Obviously took a while to get out of my system but when I did ovulate we got lucky.

Sally52014 · 05/01/2018 11:52

Thank you so much everyone. I really appreciate you sharing your experiences. I’m planning to do a test next week, just to put an end to the questioning. I don’t have any real symptoms of conception other than the slight nausea and cramping I mentioned in my original post. No heavy and sore boobs that seem to be the main indicator!

Hi all,

I'm in a similar situation to a lot of you and it's comforting to hear how common it is. I came off the pill January 1st and had my WB a couple of days later since then nothing. I'm now something like CD 79.

I spoke to my nurse who said not to worry, your body just gets lazy on the pill and takes a while to kickstart itself again but to go back in another couple of months if there is still nothing. She also said it's possible I'll ovulate and fall pregnant before it comes. Unfortunately that's left me doing an awful lot of tests with disappointing results so far.

Ah well early days best of luck to everyone, I've got my fingers crossed and I'm trying to to stress (too much Confused) x

FinnegansCake · 15/03/2018 22:19

Happened to me too, got pregnant immediately after stopping the pill.
