I have had a nexplanon for 6 years (this is my second implant) and had no periods, other than an odd bit of spotting. It ran out in July and for one reason and another it hasn’t been replaced yet, and we haven’t used any other contraception.

I started having light periods on the 1st September and was like clockwork on the first although very light up until December.
Then I just had a bit of spotting in the first half of the month. We have had sex a fair bit!
Anyway in December my boobs got really sore and are still a bit tender now, I feel really tired, a little on off nausea, bloating, weight gain, vivid dreams, and I went out one night for a party, had a drink but was so ill the next morning throwing up (never happened before!)
No bleeding yet for January, so technically I would be late now. But I keep getting BFN tests.
I have had 4 kids and I just know when I am pregnant, I kinda feel different at the moment!
Has anyone else experienced this? Of course I could be peri menopausal too (37) !

I fit implants and they are licenced for 3 years but it’s likely to be effective for longer than that. Having said that 1/1000 women will get pregnant with an in date implant. If a woman attends with an out of date implant we take a preg test and if negative we replace the implant (if that’s what she wants) then we advise a repeat preg test in 3 weeks time.

Thanks Armygirl.
I went to the clinic in August and the nurse gave my the mini pill to take until I had decided whether to have the implant replaced, but I think it was too much hormone for me! I literally plumeted into a suicidal depression within days. I work in mental health and I knew what it was so I stopped it and I went back to normal! So perhaps the implant was still kicking out a good level!
I think I will do a morning urine test and if it’s negative now, I am taking it as it’s still working and I am going to stop worrying about my period disappearing again!

Yes but go and have it renewed or taken out and have an alternative. Don’t rely on it as a contraception on its own even though it is likely still effective.
Hope it all settles down

Hi I know no one has commented in a while, but i do get really bad symptoms when my implant is ready for renewal. This is currently my 3rd, it ran out in December and have yet to get an appointment (doctors cannot fit me in yet). They range from incredible painful cramps, lower back pain that's more like an achy pressure feeling, fatigued, insomnia (the record so fat was 76 hrs without sleep), sleeping too much (after the bouts of insomnia i can end up sleeping for 2 days straight), heavy flow and when i say heavy changing a pad (them thick horrible ones that make you feel like a toddler running around with a full nappy on type) every couple of hours. The symptoms usually start when i have 2/3 months left. Now its expired so to speak add on depression, phantom pregnancy, vivid dreams, crazy boob sensitivity and a total lack of sex drive and there you have it my hectic hormonal roller coaster, not to mention my mood swings, as 32 year old i now feel like a moody teenager.
