Free fluid?

Had a 3D vaginal ultrasound today and the sonographer mentioned I had “free fluid” near my right ovary. I haven’t had any cysts that I know of, none showed on the US and I’ve had two other (abdominal) US in the last year and neither of those have shown any cysts. Is there any other cause of free fluid?

I remember seeing this on my notes after my early pregnancy scans. I think it just means that you have ovulated from that ovary.

But I could be totally but wrong so don’t listen to me!

I see, thank you! That would make more sense as I’ve no indication of cysts. Free fluid sounds scary but she said it was nothing to worry about :)

I will check my notes in the morning and see if that’s what was written just to be sure!

Thank you ☺️

There are lots of possible causes. “Free fluid” just means fluid within the pelvis in the area around the organs. It’s not a specific sign of any particular condition and doesn’t mean a lot on its own. It could be a small amount of blood or tissue fluid from a cyst that has already ruptured, fluid from a ruptured follicle at ovulation, local inflammation or quite possibly nothing at all. Your fertility specialist will take it into account when they review all your results and decide what, if anything, it means.

Hope that helps.
