WWYD Test early on Christmas Day?

RDW1989 · 16/12/2017 12:17

This our first month of ttc, and my period is due 28th December. However I am very tempted to test on Christmas Day. I bought hubby a book on pregnancy for fathers to be that I’m planning to give him when I have a positive test before showing him the pregnancy test, and Christmas Day would be the perfect time to do it.

I have bought two clear blue pregnancy tests, the one with the weeks indicator. It’s says on the packet that it’s only 65% accurate 4 days before your period is due. Is it a silly idea to test on Christmas Day given that it’s likely to be a BFN either way?

If I get a BFN I won’t mention it to hubby unless he asks. I do have the extra test to use if I miss my period at the end of dec.

For context I’m 28 (Just) he is 27, TTC1, first month TTC. Not using opks or temping yet but dtd lots. Glow app and Ovia predict ovulation around 14/15 dec but have had ewcm on and off from 11th. See pic from glow app.

Any thoughts much appreciated!!

If your testing early your better off using a frer. Clear blue tests aren't great for early testing.

I would say go for it as long as you know a bfn won't ruin your day. No one wants to be sad on Christmas :) good luck🤞

boatrace30 · 16/12/2017 12:30

I'd just warn you in case it's a bfn. I had a bfn last Xmas (approx half way through an 11month TTC journey) and it put me in such a bad mood for the whole day.

If you're fine with the disappointment go for it, but if you're not sure, don't!

Also get a first response definitely!

TheDuckSaysMoo · 16/12/2017 12:33

Plan to surprise him at midnight on hogmanay instead - then you'll be more certain. Good luck 🤞

Bubblegum89 · 16/12/2017 12:54

Personally, I wouldn’t. In the likely event that it’s a BFN, it will really put a dampener on your Christmas. I would wait until after Boxing Day. I get your enthusiasm as you are on your first month of ttc but I would try and put it to the back of your mind until after Christmas. If you’re pregnant, you’ll still be pregnant after Christmas (also 10dpo is very early to test and you’ll most likely get a negative even on a frer) and if you’re not pregnant, it won’t ruin your day. And trust me, you can’t imagine the power of a negative test lol it can ruin your whole week. Good luck!

otherdoor · 16/12/2017 12:58

Go for a new year surprise instead, as a previous poster said. Then the timing works perfectly.

Be prepared for disappointment though (sorry to sound negative!) I didn't get a BFP straight away and I was surprised how difficult I found that.

SaltySeaBird · 16/12/2017 13:01

I struggled to conceive, only test if you know it won’t spoil the day. Internet cheapies gave me positives five days before I was due.

Personally I’d wait until NY. Good luck!

Oysterbabe · 16/12/2017 13:11

Clear blue digitals are less sensitive than other tests and not very suitable for early testing. Buy a first response and be prepared mentally for disappointment. Conception takes an average of 9 months.

surreygirl1987 · 16/12/2017 13:16

I was surprised by how disappointed I was when I got a negative (each month including the first month trying) so tbh I wouldn't test on Xmas day. I thought it would happen immediately and I've been trying since the summer! I'm purposely going to test a couple of days after Xmas and just not drink much. Good luck!!

RDW1989 · 16/12/2017 14:03

Thank you all for your responses. I agree that I could be setting myself up for disappointment. I think the fact that it’s around Christmas makes the pressure so much higher than other months, maybe not the best time to start trying Hmm

I didn’t realise clear blue wasn’t very sensitive, I ordered a couple of frers. I’ll try to hold out until after af is due to avoid disappointment and wasted pts. If I can’t resist maybe I could test christmas eve morning instead (4 days before af is due) so i have time to get back in the Christmas spirit.

I am desperate to test now even though I think I only ovulated thurs/yesterday, I’m so impatient!! Blush

I gave dh a baby name opk for his birthday as I'd had several positive tests. Four days later I got af. Now we still have the book. It's an awful reminder... 9 months since then and we aren't pregnant yet (and that was after nearly a year of ttc). I still don't know what to do with the book...

physicskate · 16/12/2017 14:19

Baby name book!! Not opk. Jesus my autocorrect is sad...

RDW1989 · 16/12/2017 15:08

Really sorry to hear that @physicskate :( I did think about that outcome, as it seems it's not as uncommon as you'd think/hope. Did you have the BFPs before or after af was due? Hubby knows I'll be testing before new year's eve as we have a new years eve party a few days after I'm due, and if af has' arrived I'll need to know if it's okay to drink...

I tested 11 and 13 dpo. Had a negative 16dpo (tried with a digi to get the weeks thingy) and was bleeding by 18dpo.

It is shockingly common and yet we don't, as a society, have the language to discuss this openly...

chocolateorangeowls · 16/12/2017 18:05

I got a positive FRER at 9dpo with both my pregnancies. (One did end in miscarriage but not until 10 weeks) I also got pregnant very quickly both times so it is possible. It depends on how you will feel about it if it's a BFN? It could be a lovely surprise but also would it ruin your day if it isn't a BFP?

Good luck with whatever you decide to do Grin

Buttonmushroom · 20/12/2017 00:57

I'm in the same boat as you OP. Not even sure exactly when I ovulated or if we caught the right time. My periods have been super erratic recently so very hard to track. Fingers very tightly crossed.

Definitely definitely want to test Christmas Day (morning) but struggling even to hold off until then. Really want to give my partner some good news to hopefully turn the corner after what's been a crap few months! Think I ovulated around the 12th but really could have been any time.

I can be your testing buddy if you like OP. Wishing you all the luck.

RDW1989 · 20/12/2017 13:52

Hey @buttonmushroom I'm still undecided, but I am thinking to test on Christmas eve morning instead with a FRER (so 4 days before af is due) so that if I am disappointed (which I think I will be) I will have time to cheer up before Xmas day. If that's a negative I think I'll wait until New Year's eve, a few days after af is due.

I'm also struggling. I'm so tempted to test, but I'm telling myself it's a waste of money as I know there's no way it would show positive so early. I have 4 tests (2 clear blue, 2 frer) in the house though, so it is tempting!

Fx for you!!

We literally match!
AF due 28th for me too, EWCM , OV pains around the 11th and suspected to have ovulated 14/15th Dec!
I'm tempted to use a FRER too as they say up to 6 days before expected period!

Hope you get your BFP, would be amazing for Xmas 🤞🏼

DownstairsMixUp · 20/12/2017 15:07

First response as others have said, like a PP said I didn't do it on Xmas day but I waited till boxing day, I got my first response and did it in the loo then shouted to DH I needed him quick and showed him the test! :)

RDW1989 · 20/12/2017 15:56

Good luck @lauraxgirl! Are you planning to test Xmas day?

@downstairsmixup Congrats on the bfp! I would like to wait but... I know realistically I will cave. Especially as it's my first month ttc, I think I'm overexcited. But Xmas eve definitely seems a better option.

lauraxgirl · 20/12/2017 16:41

I can't decide 🙈
Thinking more towards no as it's only cycle1 TTC and I'm already thinking about how upset I am gonna be when AF arrives!!
Gonna TRY and just wait until the 28th but give it to the 31st as I'm irregular

I've seen lots of people get their BFPs on or after 11DPO - not many seem to get it before

Bubblegum89 · 20/12/2017 16:54

Honestly ladies, you’re only on your first cycle of ttc. Start as you mean to go on, don’t set yourselves up for disappointment. Try and hold off until your period is late if you can, most people won’t get a BFP until after af is late. Not only that, but testing early can pick up on a chemical pregnancy which is of course is even more disappointing. Trust someone who has been doing this stupid dance for over a year now lol good luck to you both

lauraxgirl · 20/12/2017 17:11

@Bubblegum89

That was my thoughts! AF will determine it anyway!
Thank you

Hope you're not in the 'stupid dance' much longer HmmGrin

Bubblegum89 · 20/12/2017 17:24

I totally understand the want to test early, it’s just not worth it in my opinion. Others might disagree but seeing a negative test has a bigger impact on you than you might think. I think it’s best to wait until a missed period. I know a lot of ladies who have tested early at 10/11dpo and got a BFP but ended up getting af because the pregnancy was chemical. Other than not symptom spotting, taking tests only after late af is the advice I would give to anyone starting out ttc. The excitement can all quickly turn to frustration! And thank you, I hope not either but I think I have a long journey ahead of me yet. Best of luck to you :)

RDW1989 · 20/12/2017 17:28

Thanks @bubblegum, I appreciate the advice. I totally agree, and this was my opinion before we actually started TTC, but in practice I'm struggling to stick to it [embarrassed]!! I have had quite bad af style cramping for a while now (from 1.5 weeks until af is due) which is making me tempted to test. Will try to hold out as long as possible! Wink

OP posts:
Bubblegum89 · 20/12/2017 17:53

I think I replied to another of your posts about cramping? It’s also entirely possible that the cramps are due to coming off contraception. After stopping birth control last year, I had cramping for two weeks that continued to get worse to the point where I was almost passing out with the pain (was mostly in right ovary area but also spread across my abdomen) and I ended up in the hospital having emergency blood tests and scans. They said that my body had some kind of reaction to stopping birth control and had caused some pelvic inflammation. It could perhaps be something like that?

RE the testing, be strong! You don’t know how long you’re going to be riding this train, it might be a few months, it might be years. Strength is exactly what you need. Someone once told me that taking tests too early is the same as taking a ten pound note and just flushing it down the toilet. It’s more than likely to be negative and you’ve wasted your money. I stopped bothering to do tests after that. You’ll get your BFP but it might not be straight away, just take it as it comes and if AF is late, go and get yourself some FRER’s :)
