I just found out I'm pregnant! What do I do now?

Call your doctor's surgery to ask for details of the midwife so you can get in touch and arrange a booking appointment, although that won't be until you're at least 8 weeks.

See your GP. Is it good news? If so they’ll refer you to the midwife. If you’re unsure and want to discuss other options they’ll refer you on too.

In that case huge congratulations! Make sure you’re taking folic acid if not already. Your GP will refer you to your midwife who usually see you at about 8-10 weeks for a booking appointment and your first scan is booked in for 12 weeks (ish).

You don’t need a GP appointment, there is nothing for them to do. Just make a booking in appointment with the midwife by ringing your surgery. It’s just answering lots of questions to fill in your notes and probably peeing in a pot.

I guess it depends on the surgery then, each time I phoned up they made me see the GP first. Perhaps just phone and ask the receptionist and they’ll book you in with with the dr or midwife.

It depends where you live. Some GP surgeries see you to refer you on, others don't. My surgery went from the former to the latter in the 13 months between my pregnancies.

Call your surgery and ask what the process is for you.
