Hi all,

I have recently got my period back now DS is 15 months old.
My periods have always been very irregular, one can come 2.5 months after the last then the next can come after just 4 weeks.

Do I still try for 14 (or is it 12?) days after 1st day of my last period?
Or have you got any other tips?

Thanx in advance

Irregular periods are often caused by hormonal imbalances and it may be that you are not ovulating regularly if at all. It is quite possible to have periods without ovulating. In this regard polycystic ovaries is a common culprit (if your thyroid gland is not to blame).

Therefore trying to track ovulation yourself is not worth doing if periods are irregular.

I would go to your GP and have a blood test done to see what your hormone levels are like. In this regard the GP must compare your LH (luteinising hormone) against that of your FSH (follicle stimulation hormone). Both of these levels ideally should be the same; if they are awry you have your answer as to why your periods and ovulation are awry.

This problem is very common and can be treated but you ideally should see a gynae.

You need a diagnosis first and foremost - it is certainly in your interests to have one.

Ok, really? I'm a bit surprised as this is the way my periods have been since the very start.
Thank you for the advise, I will book an appointment with my GP as suggested.
Thanx

Hi,
I'm kind of in the same boat as you- except don't have a little one yet.
My periods have always been all over the place and although that's annoying at times it has never been an issue.
I miscarried in Jan and am about to return to the challenge, so to speak.
When we decided to start trying last time I waited for the thin cm and then the ewcm (sorry, TMI?) as a ovulation guide and it worked on the first month!!- so hopefully it'll be the same this time.
I ignore the day 14 thing, it means nothing to my body. When I had my scan the sonographer said that you actually ovulate about 14 days before your period, not 14 days after you start. That kind of makes sense to me... this month i think i ovulated at about day 36 (!!) and sure enough my period came yesterday at day 51. Odd, but there you go!!
Hope that is slightly clearer than mud

Have a look at www.americanpregnancy.org and the getting pregnant section. They have loads of info on ovulation. Usually by rule of thumb the first part of your AF is irregular due to all manner of variables but the second part or days past ovulation(DPO) is the same in an individual. The american web site givse you good advice on looking at biological signs of ovulation.

If you can't get a pattern i'd see a GP.

Good luck.
