Spina Bifida and family history??

My mum had epilepsy, had 3 naturally healthy child then had my sister who has Spina Bifida. During all pregnancies she had standard dose of folic acid. None of her or my dad's family have any family history of neural tube defects. She was told my sister's SB could be the result of epilepsy medication interfering with folic acid. But I have also read that babies can be born with SB without any family history of it. Im confused what are my chances of having a baby with SB is? Hmm
Any advice?

I would suggest talking to your GP but I know I took double doses of folic acid due to my age and that was medically OK.

Can you see a genetic councelor? I was offered that option by my doctor as I have spina bifida.

As previous posters have said, if you have a family history it is definitely worth talking to your GP about a referral to see a genetic counsellor. The wait in my area is quite long but they arranged a telephone appointment within a few weeks.

I don’t have any experience with spina bifida but do know that your GP should be able to advise you about stronger folic acid doses etc if they are concerned about a familial risk.

Good luck xx

I'm waiting for an appointment but it is taking so long. I've tried chasing them up due to miscommunication but so far no luck.

I have been prescribed higher dose of folic acid and have been on this for about a month.
