Baby shopping before BFP!?!

TheSarahChronicles · 25/11/2017 11:48

Is anyone overcome with the urge to start baby shopping before even getting a positive result?! I keep seeing gorgeous unisex clothes and gender neutral toys and I just want to start collecting and shopping but terrified it will give me bad juju/ jinx me in some way - silly I know! Has anyone started shopping or does anyone feel the same way?! Xx

I avoided doing this.

Think how much you can enjoy shopping once you're looking really likely to have a baby (like after the 20 week scan for example).

A lot of people endure a long road to having their first baby. I was glad when I miscarried with my first baby not to have made any purchases as I know I would have imagined putting that baby in those clothes.

Having said that if it's just clothes it's pretty low risk. Prams and cots I would definitely wait until late on in a pregnancy!

One step at a time?

Owlpatrol · 25/11/2017 12:32

Oh I'm always googling prams and Christmas themed clothing I don't think there's any harm in looking but I haven't actually bought anything before bfp as now onto 12th month

emelsie · 25/11/2017 13:32

Today when I was out I saw the cutest little vests , I was so tempted, but I pulled myself away, it will only be worse if I have baby items sitting in the house, especially every time I get a BFN instead of BFP. I definitely browse online, that’s bad enough though, honestly it is so hard ! Xx

TheSarahChronicles · 25/11/2017 14:13

It's sooo tempting but I agree, need to practice some restraint 😂 it's just so fun to look and soooo tempting! Xx

If it takes a long time, those items you buy will just serve as a reminder of how you don't have what you really want. They may make you sad and angry and when you do get that bfp, they may have negative feelings so you may not want to use them.

I really wouldn't want them.

If you really want to do something, put the money to one side and go on a splurge once you've had your scan.

Needadvicetoleave · 25/11/2017 15:15

But I'm a naturally negative person! So feel free to ignore me!

justtheonethen · 25/11/2017 15:23

I bought something when we first started ttc. It then took 4 years and ivf for a bfp. I'm 25 weeks now and I gave away the sleepsuit I bought as it just became a symbol of the disappointment I felt month after month. I couldn't dress a baby in it, I came to hate that bastard sleep suit!

I have only this week started buying stuff for the baby. I thought I would as soon as I got pregnant but actually decided to hold off. To be honest just being excited it's finally happening is enough!

Lola247 · 25/11/2017 15:34

I did. I bought things on offer and deals. We had quite a struggle to conceive and it was my way of not giving up. Could always go and hold a baby grow when things were tough. But I was fortunate to never have lost a baby and that would obviously been very different. Now 33 weeks and can’t wait to use it all. Good luck with ttc.

BandhaAid · 25/11/2017 15:37

Have never done that and never would because it feels like I would 'jinx' something. In fact, with my ds, I didn't buy anything until after my five month scan.

Wolfiefan · 25/11/2017 15:41

I had two losses. I wouldn't.
We got our first big purchase when I was about 6 months pg first time round. Only as it was perfect and on sale. Would have preferred to have nothing in the house until baby was safely in the house.

Oysterbabe · 25/11/2017 16:27

You would be insane to do this. What if you never conceive? How depressing would it be to have all that stuff? I'm sure you'll be fine but not all women are.

Bubblegum89 · 25/11/2017 16:58

I was going to buy a cute little onesie I could use to tell my OH I was pregnant when I was on cycle 2 or 3. I’m now about to go on to cycle 13. I’m glad I never bought it and honestly I wouldn’t buy stuff, even clothes, before a bfp because you never know how long it will take and it will just serve as a reminder of what you don’t have

LovePinaColada · 25/11/2017 17:03

We bought one cutie babygro the day we decided to TTC as inspiration etc, but now on Cycle 8 it's busy gathering dust. It doesn't make me feel upset though & is actually still motivating etc!

BertieBotts · 25/11/2017 17:07

It's not going to affect anything luck wise. But it could be disappointing/painful if it takes you a long time to conceive or you have miscarriages.

It is up to you. I wouldn't. We have done some fantasy shopping though, I won't lie. Pinterest is actually my place I do it privately, I can delete the board every few months (as the shops obviously change their ranges) and start a new one. Then I'll be prepared when the time comes but I'm not breaking my heart over little babygros which aren't getting used nor wasting money.

Lozmatoz · 25/11/2017 17:21

No. I didn’t buy a thing with my first until I was well over 20 weeks.

BandhaAid · 25/11/2017 17:24

I couldn't do it in case I never conceive or don't conceive for a very very long time!!

Stillwishihadabs · 25/11/2017 17:27

I didn't until after 33 weeks both times. Baby showers and the like make me twitchy. I have worked on SCBU though so that's a big part of it

TheSarahChronicles · 25/11/2017 21:42

I've made the decision definitely not to start! It's easy to get carried away with excitement, but as many of you say could be more of a symbol of something sad if it didn't happen smartish. I could easily buy everything, but only seriously considered the odd item that I was worried I'd never find again, but going to hold my horses, bide my time and all of the other patience encouraging phrases :) xx

@TheSarahChronicles Anyway, buying stuff when you actually are pregnant is so exciting and new products for babies come out all the time so there's no need to do it all before you need to!!

TheSarahChronicles · 25/11/2017 22:05

@BandhaAid that is very true! ❤️ I'm the first to admit that I've gone a bit baby mad preemptively, thank goodness I have my husband to keep me in check and you kind folk to give me sensible advice 😂 x

See I did buy something, but sort of not on purpose. My best friend fell pregnant by accident and I bought her little girl loads of things but there was one little top I bought which I fell in love with and decided to keep for my future baby. This was 6 years ago and we had no plans of TTC then but I now have a little girl of my own. Unfortunately I totally forgot about the top and when I found it by accident she was too big to wear it 🤦‍♀️

TheSarahChronicles · 25/11/2017 22:32

Oh @chocolateorangeowls that is such a cute story ❤️

Triskaidekaphilia · 26/11/2017 01:39

Absolutely, I have managed to resist the urge but been very tempted. I do have 3 tiny babygrows from about 2 years ago before we were even TTC- I loved them and the store that sold the set was sold out and then I saw them on eBay and knew if I didn't get them then I'd never have another chance. But I won't get anything else now we're TTC because I'm pessimistic about when it's going to happen and there's a teeny superstitious part of my brain that doesn't like the idea. No harm in looking though!
