Zika and 6 month wait

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on this.

My husband and I went on honeymoon to somewhere with a moderate zika risk earlier in the year. We've been waiting at least 6 months before ttc, as per the medical advice but 4 and a half months in we've had a broken condom. I'm also on the pill so we're not worried about accidentally getting pregnant but does this really mean we have to start the clock all over again? Obviously we're keen to be as sensible as possible. I'm just worried this could keep happening.

Any advice very welcome!

Hi. Just a bit a reassurance! My DH and I went to the Domican Republic last May so we put TTC off for a while. A month later I became pregnant and worried myself sick. Fortunately DS is now a healthy 7 mo!
Try not to worry, easier said than done I know!

I commend you for waiting and being sensible. Some people on here wouldn’t and I’ll be honest I couldn’t live with myself if something happened to my baby had I done the same. We waited too. However, you having a broken condom is a tricky one. Did either of you have any bites or symptoms? I’d say if it’s no you may be safe to carry on with protection and maybe speak with your GP and take their advice. Good luck!!

Just go for a blood test. It can be done as early as a month after you get back and will tell you if you have zika or not. I doubt the NHS offer it, though.

I don’t think you need to reset the clock. The 6 months is for men because it can live in sperm for 6 months meaning it could pass to you. It’s 8 weeks for women so you just need to wait 8 weeks from the split condom in case your husband passed it on to you!
I caught Zika on honeymoon earlier this year, I now have antibodies, specialists basically say that once you have antibodies you are fine to conceive in same way German measles is only dangerous to contract whilst pregnant but fine once you have antibodies, hope that helps!

Thanks all! Flyingfruit - that 8 weeks point is a really good one. Might look into tests as well, I just heard they weren't 100% accurate.

Basically I'm a worrier - so just trying to minimise the chances of me spending the whole time worrying about this!

Thanks again

Even though the tests aren’t 100% i’d Still have it if I were you. They’re very accurate and it will put your mind at rest
