Some Clomid questions

Am due to start my clomid next cycle (100mg per day for 5 days starting on day 2) but was wondering about a couple of things:
Will my fertile period still be around day 14 or will it be much sooner? My consltnt is going to be scanning me for the 1st 14 days and said he would try to pinpoint this for me but I would be interested to know in advance, from, others' experience.
Dh is going away for a boys weekend to Amsterdam (yes I know!) and this will fall on days 4 to 8 of my cycle (days 2 to 6 of the clomid).
Another question regarding the quality of dh's sperm (which I seem to be obsessed with and I'm not sure it's healthy for me!): When in Amst, he's going to a football tournament and says he's not planning on drinking to excess but he obviously will have quite a bit. He's given up smoking but says he may partake in a bit of special cake whilst there.
Realistically, is this going to affect his sperm to the extent that they will all be too stoned to do anything when he gets back? And will it affect subsequent 'batches'?

Moomin, don't know much about the "Special Cake" bit (although I know what it is, I don't know if it will effect his little soldiers)
My cycles were 28-72 days depending, when I started Clomid, they started me on 50mg days 2-6, when they scanned me, nothing happened, then they put my dosage upto 100mg days 2-6 and a vast difference, my period arrived within 34 days, I had ovulated, but wasted it (much to my annoyance). I was told not to take the 3rd lot of 100mg clomid as they have refered me to the IVF clinic in Leeds. Are you having a "normal cycle" (Anything between 20 odd to 36 days), if you don't mind me asking,

Marijuana does have a very bad effect on both sperm count and motility even if used for a short period of time. It affects the chemical composition of the sperm.

With regards to clomid this treatment can be very much hit and miss for some and you should not be on this for any longer than six months. It is not always suitable for some women with such problems like polycystic ovaries or PCOS to take as it can affect hormone levels.

If you are taking clomid due to you having one of the above problems neither temp charting or opk's are worth doing. The surest way of knowing whether ovulation has occured or not is for them to do blood tests.

I'm taking clomid simply because I haven't conceived after 18m of trying. I ovulate normally and my cycle is 28-30 days. I get cervical mucus before ovulating and have used opks previously to check I was ov'ing when I thought - and I was. I've also had the progesterone blood test when they 1st started investigating why I wasn't getting pg.
My consultant will be able to see when I'm about to 'pop' as well - I just wondered if I would ovulate earlier than usual or anything.
But is the sperm affected by just a one-off dose of hash, like Twiglett said? If he gets rid of the dodgy lot after coming back from Amst, won't we be ok, presuming I'll be most fertile about a week after he gets back? Isn't it prolonged use of it that affects sperm's mobility?
I don't want to put too much of a downer on dh's weekend away! He's such a good boy and deserves a little treat with his friends. Having said that, if it does affect his sperm, he will respect that and not partake.

Sorry, that sounded wrong - I meant I was agreeing with Twiglett when she said she thought it WOULDN'T affect him as long as he'd got rid of the stoned sperm!

hi moomin - my fertile period was picked up at day 13, but this was due to the scans I was having from day 2. As for the sperm issue - I don;t think a one off should make a difference, and we were told to ensure that the sperm used for the insemination was 3 days old! good luck btw.xx

Moomin, I had clomid on 2- 5 and ov'd on day 17. Use OPKs or some other method of indicating when you ov, it might not be day 14.

Re drink/a smoke, this ttc lark can take a long time and I dont think many of us can live like an angels throughtout. Ideally yes, both of you should omit alcohol etc but I didnt and I conceived on my second clomid cycle. In fact, when I conceived I had been out clubbing till 3 and had a fair bit to drink. I wouldnt put too much emphasis on the odd smoke or drink.

Ressurecting this thread again in the hope someone can help me.

I'm on about day 18 of my 2nd round of clomid (100mg day 2 to day 6). For the past week I've felt very tender around the ovaries and womb area. The only way I can describe it is to compare it with the 2nd or 3rd day of a period when you feel like you can't sit down too hard as everything feels a bit swollen, iykwim! I've lay on my back and tried to feel if it's hurting then but it seems ok. It just hurts (mostly on one side) when I sit down and when I go to the loo. It also felt a bit tender when me and dh had sex this week. Is this normal or should I contact my consultant? I don't want him thinking I'm just fussing for nothing.

moomin, don't really know about the clomid aspect of it, but that is how I feel when I am ovulating.

Moomin, interesting to read that you have been giving clomid even tho you know you were ovulating. As you know I have been trying for about as long as you (altho 1 mc last year at 5 weeks) and was wondering what would happen if I went to the docs about not being able to conceive (despite successfully conceiving ds1 within 3 months). I always thought that clomid was given if you weren't ovulating so I might go back to the dr as it is really getting me down now (so many friends have conceived #2 very very quickly and I'm finding it more & more difficult to deal with). I know I also ovulate through OPKs/temping/cm etc. Can you explian more about the scanning side of things? Thx.

Haven't been able to post much the last 10 days as got a new computer and have ONLY JUST got onto broadband - hurrah!
I rang my consultant's sec in the end and told her what the problem was. She was very prompt in ringing me back and my cons wanted to see the next day first thing for a scan. Went in for it and it turns out I developed a cyst and then bled into the follicle left after the egg and popped - or something like that and that's what was causing the pain. He said if I'm not pg this month I'm to delay taking the clomid until day 5 and in the meantime get a scan during the back end of my period to see if the cyst has gone with my period.
Trying to stay upbeat and positive but finding it hard at the moment. I keep thinking this is my body's way of saying it didn't want or need the clomid in the 1st place and as a punishment I'll now start getting cysts.

Whole situation not helped by big upset last night with dh during which he said that he was finding it all too much pressure and that our sex life had become mechanical. No shit sherlock! IT all ended very badly and consequently we feel very sorry for ourselves today. Dh is very apologetic but I spose we're both just responding to the stress of ttc. We'll have been at it 2 years come january. I'm actually wondering if we should just give it a break but I'm also worried about my age (36). Sorry for blathering on. Feel very low.

sorry bluestar - didn't reply to you. From what I've gathered/read/asked, the clomid was a try at boosting my hormones as there is nothing actually stopping us conceiving. I'm ovulating ok, dh's sperm was fine when it was tested and i haven't got any nasty blockages or anyhting like that. I think it's stress that's mostly stopping me from conceiving, i really do.

Not quite sure what you mean about explaining the scanning, but I'll try to tell you what i know. many consultants like to scan their patients on clomid at least for the 1st month or so to see if you are overstimulated (producing too many eggs) or understimuated. It's done like an ultrasound but vaginally rather than over your belly. S/he would usually do a scan around day 10/11 so they can see if the eggs are the right size and when they're due to pop, so they can tell you when to have sex too. (Like anyone who's been ttc for this long wouldn't know by now!) HTH x

Sorry to hijack this thread but I need some urgent advice for a friend who I think is having her second miscarriage. She's about 6 weeks and has started having a discharge - brown, which is what happened last time. It then developed into full bleeding in the space of about 5 days and she obviously lost the baby. Does Clomid help miscarriages stop or not happen? Please help.

sorry bugzi, have not heard of this at all. As far as I know all clomid does is boost hormones that stimuate egg production.

I know your friend must be feeling desperate but if it's going to happen it's going to happen - there aren't any 'miracle' cures for miscarriage . All the best

Hi Twiglett and Moomin,

Thanx for your replies, I?ve since found out Clomid is a fertility drug and probably won?t help with a miscarriage! No real news at the moment. Did a lot of investigation on the internet etc yesterday and I think she may have a hormone imbalance ? not enough progesterone which means the egg has nothing to nourish/attach itself to in the first few weeks and so dies. If she does (fingers crossed she doesn?t) lose this baby, at least we have a lot more information to hand and she lives in Amsterdam where her GP has said if she does have another miscarriage, they will investigate. I suppose we just have to wait and see what happens in the next few days/weeks. Will keep you posted.

Sitting here on day 29 with AF pains, so it looks like the clomid hasn't worked its wonders again. Thinking that maybe we should have a break from it? Has anyone taken clomid in stages rather than for 6 months at a time?
