Not ovulating :(

We are on cycle 6 and because of my age (35) I have been to the gp who did a blood test this month and the results came back as I didn't ovulate.

I have no idea what this means, if it is a one off or a bigger problem. Got an appointment on friday but feeling sad and confused.

Posted too soon, confused as I had high and peak results on the CB OPK.

Basically, can't get pregnant if you don't ovulate. When you go to your appointment, the GP might refer you on to a fertility specialist or try to monitor you for another cycle or two.

How long are your cycles? Are they regular?

NimbleKnitter · 24/10/2017 18:03

It sucks, but it’s good they caught it.

There’s loads they can do for ovulation failure (clomid being the most obvious).

The opk will only pick up the LH surge, which is your body preparing to ovulate, rather than ovulation itself.

Fingers crossed for you

hurrythefuckupgeorge · 24/10/2017 18:19

Thanks Jo and Nimble

My cycles are regular and 29 days, I also don't have any signs of PCOS which would seem to be the most obvious cause.

It is good that they caught it and hopefully further investigations will be quick as time obviously isn't on my side.

Would make sure that the blood test is being done on the correct day in your cycle. It needs to be done at 7days past ovulation to show an accurate reading as to whether you’re ovulating or not. Do you have regular cycles?

YouBoggleMyMind · 24/10/2017 18:20

Sorry cross post.

hurrythefuckupgeorge · 24/10/2017 18:32

Thanks Boggle, it was only a few days after my peak reading on the Clear Blue so it maybe was too early in the cycle, I got the peak reading on day 18 and tested on day 21.

physicskate · 24/10/2017 19:03

If you got peak on cd 18, it means ovulation is likely within 48 hours, with the most likely being cd 19. You needed the blood test 7 days after, so about cd 27.

Ask the gp to repeat next cycle and go 7 days after ovulation (or suspected ov)

hurrythefuckupgeorge · 24/10/2017 19:17

Thanks kate

I will speak to the GP and explain my cycle and the positive OPKs. Hopefully it is just that they have missed it

Hi OP, sorry to hear what you're going through. I just wanted to tell u my experience - I was in a similar situation and the tests I had said I didn't ovulate. I was referred to a fertility consultant who put me on clomid, however 5 days into clomid I found out I was already 5 weeks pregnant. So I most definitely was ovulating and I just think the tests were done at the wrong time.
The positive opks make me think even more so that they've not caught your cycle correctly. I hope it all works out for you and just wanted to give you a bit of hope x

Bosabosa · 24/10/2017 22:07

I had this - and now have a baby!

Ask doctor to check your prolactin levels as part of the blood test. They don’t do this as standard but is a reason for irregular periods.
Sounds like you were tested on the wrong day though.

thedayismine · 24/10/2017 23:03

I had this test result but was getting opk positives and lots of other OV symptoms .
I eventually had a scan ( not sure why exactly as it's a while ago !) and they could see evidence of ovulation in the follicles .
So try not to worry just yet about treatment ( though agree with PPs it's treatable if needs be!)
I ended up with two DC and no treatment needed though dC1 took nearly 18 months.

Hi hurry - just chucking my experience in too!

I've been having 21 day bloods taken since May this year. My cycles are normally 28 days. First 3 months they were taken on day 23 as day 21 was a Saturday - the result was always 29 and they were looking for 30 to confirm ovulation.

When I went for a rubella immunity check the nurse was so lovely and told me that day 23 is far too late and that it has to be on Day 21 (or 7DPO) - at this point I was already referred to the FC so they took up the testing. In September I was tested on Day 21 and again the results were 29, the doctor said she was fairly confident that I was ovulating as I've all the other signs and 29 was a good level but this month to start testing on day 19.... so alas I went along on day 19 this month and my result was 41!! Just goes to show that the levels can drop sharply and that its very easy to miss the day that would confirm it. Please try not to worry!

Did they confirm what you level was?

Cupcakesandlove · 25/10/2017 11:18

Hi,

I just had a 21 blood done yesterday however I was told it had to be taken 7 days after my last period? My last period was last Tuesday bloods taken this Tuesday.... would this mean it’s going to come back as negative too? My cycles are 25 day

physicskate · 25/10/2017 11:44

7 days before the start of af... not 7 days after. You ovulate about two weeks before the start of af, so to test whether or not you did ov, they’d have to test after ovulation. It’s day 21 for a 28 day cycle....

Cupcakesandlove · 25/10/2017 19:07

Oh for goodness sake what a waste of my time! Thank you for clarifying I had better book another appointment

MaisyPops · 25/10/2017 22:34

Following for info and support. We've been TTC since last august so are on cycle 13/14 (i haven't kept a precise tally until I started lurking on the conception boards).

I've got to get day 3 abd day 21 bloods done soon according to the doctor so hearing other experiences is helpful.

peachesarenom · 26/10/2017 18:03

Hi all,

I've also been referred for these bloods. I had loads done days 2-4 of my cycle and then have to have one done on day 25 as my average cycle is 32 days. But my cycle is all over the place so who knows what it will say!

physicskate · 26/10/2017 19:08

Had my day 21 today - ouch!! Not sure when/ how I get the results? Presumably, ring the consultant's office maybe Monday/ Tuesday??

hurrythefuckupgeorge · 26/10/2017 22:05

Thanks for sharing all your experiences and nice to read some happy endings too. Congratulations Smile

Sorry to hear others are going through and have been through this. My appointment is tomorrow so will let you know how I get on, I am thinking though that they have been done too early which I guess is hopeful. They didn't say in the letter what my levels were so I will ask.

Thanks everyone as this is all new to me and I panicked a bit, I hadn't done any research into anything so didn't even know about Clomid Blush or anything else so very grateful of your support.

Hope everyone else gets some answers soon.

OP posts:
hurrythefuckupgeorge · 27/10/2017 10:34

Just an update after my appointment, got bloods retaken today as the Dr agreed it was probably too early. Will get results on Tuesday and then will discuss any further treatment needed.

Thanks again everyone.

Hey, I haven't read all posts and someone else might have suggested this but I chart my bbt as I have irregular cycles and rarely ovulate. Opks etc are good to indicate you might ovulate shortly. Temp change indicates you HAVE ovulated which is super reassuring if you're not sure. 😁
