Using niccotine patches whilst ttc.

Is it safe to use niccotine patches whilst trying to get pregnant.I want to give up smoking but cannot do it without nrt so I was thinking of using patches but i am also trying to get pregnant and dont want to cause harm to my unborn baby should i concieve when i am using nrt. I sound like a loony but can anyone help?

Hi - assume you're not having treatment for conception - but hope this helps. Read Dr Winston's (IVF Pioneer) book and for assisted conception he states that if a woman smokes she shouldn't suddenly give up as the body would then change quickly - so I would think it wouldn't do any longterm damage or affect your chances - but I'm no expert - interesting though as when I read that I was very surprised as one would assume that he would have advised the opposite. So, if that's the case for IVF ladies, I would think it stands for normal conception.

thanks flumpette Im not having treatment and I do remember my dr saying that I shouldnt just stop when I was pregnant, but i just wanted to check.I just shouldnt have stared again after my ds was born

Hi Mitzi - ooohhh - I didn't mean smoke when pregnant, but Dr Winston said if one is trying to get pregnant, don't just suddenly stop as the body would react to it - but once pregnant I am sure it would be best to stop straight away.

Why dont you give up before ttc?

Hi Hercules, I know it makes sense to stop 1st but I really want another baby asap, it will probably take a while but I just wanted to know incase i get caught straight away.I will probably only use patches for a short ammount of time just to get over the initial craving and then its just up to my willpower.
