Using ovulation tests to establish cycle after the pill

Have recently come off the pill to give my body a break before TTC after our wedding next summer. A baby right now wouldn't be a disaster, but as I'm under 30 and pregnancy this month would involve walking down the aisle at 38 weeks Confused I'm keen to avoid it!

We're using condoms but I'd like to know when I'm ovulating so we can avoid DTD on the most fertile days as a back up. I've bought a pack of Clearblue thingys that look like pregnancy tests and identify the four most fertile days. Obviously with them being a bit pricey I'd like to work it out in one month and then do the maths from there.

I finished my pill on Friday 11 August and then had a bleed between Monday 21 August and Friday 25 August (ish). Haven't had a bleed yet but anticipating something soon - although I do know it can take a while to settle back into a regular cycle length.

Once I do start the next period, when would you start using the ovulation tests - from the last day of the period onwards? Is it worth skipping this month and doing it next month again, or are things likely to be back to normal by now? Is it worth waiting until the number of days between my periods is relatively constant?

Apologies if these are stupid questions - I've been on various forms of homonal contraception for just over a decade, so I can't remember anything about how my cycles used to be!

Also any tips about how not to balls up the tests would be great... I've taken a few nervy pregnancy tests over the years but this is new territory!

Shit that was long sorry Blush
Also the under 30 comment was to indicate no rush, not that I want to avoid pregnancy for that reason Grin
