Cystic fibrosis carrier testing, how long?

Ive name changed as ive discussed this in real life.

I was just wondering if anybody has any experience of how long the CF carrier testing process takes in the uk, south west England if this makes a difference. Google hasn't been much help.

I took a carrier testing referral form into my GP surgery several months ago and recently went in to check on its progress as I hadn't heard anything. Turns out the referral hadn't been made. The GP was very apologetic and assured me it would be sent this time.

A close relative has recently had a baby who has CF and I have discovered I have a 1 in 2 chance of being a carrier. We were ttc before we realised this. Due to a number of factors we would like to restart the ttc process as soon as possible and any info on how long testing might take would be really useful.

Thanks in advance.

Me and my DH were tested last year, the results came through within a couple of weeks. We're in Scotland though so not sure if that makes a difference. An aunt of his on his mum's side died from it at the age of 7 so his grandad is worried about any new addition to the family and wants us all to be tested, happily we're both clear.

Hiya, thanks for replying, that's really helped. Glad you were both clear Smile

Have you asked your GP to mark it as urgent as you are TTC. If not you can contact your local genetic team and let them know this yourself as they will likely see you urgently then. You can find your local genetic centre on genetic alliance webpage.

When blood is taken for the test, it is likely to be 2-4 weeks for the result to come back. They may also want to test your partner.

Good luck

Had your oh been tested already?

it's fairly quick in my area too. I expect the gp forgetting to send your referral will be he slowest but. You could call you hospital genetic department yourself via the hospital switchboard to chase?

Is your OH being tested as well?

You both need to be carriers to have a child with CF. Then the chances are around 1 in 4 of a child having CF.

It took 2 weeks for ours.
