somone posted this which helped

I also bought some cheap ovulation tests from Ebay for £3.50 and they worked!

If you have a regular period then it should be about 5 days between the end and the begining of the next (if I remember right) you can tell by your discharge(sorry) it should be thin rather than thick.

if you read more into the tests - you may only have a 12 hour window to catch your LH surge.

What about temping...there is a thread with some friendly girls who will talk you through it. It is somewhere on the conception board.

RLR - i sympathise, i concieved straight away with ds, took 9 months with dd now pg with no 3 took 5 months of trying!!
no reason as to why the differences - hilary's advice on discharge is true - MW told me to look closely for "sticky mucous" (sorry if you just went eeeeuuuwwwww )
you will probably only get it once a month and will notice it when wiping after being to the loo. sorry for being graphic but can't think of any subtle way to explain this!! anyway that is your time so when you see it stop EVERYTHING and get to it!!! call dh/p home from work if necessary - it is after all an emergency!! best of luck and try to be patient (i know it's not easy)

I kept a record of periods and luckily am pretty regular, (28 days), I worked out using a thermometer that I ovulate on day 12 after start of period which thankfully coincides with an almonst clear discharge. Am told, that you ovulate in the afternoon around 4 pm(??!) and the egg is available for a short window....12 hours or so..Sperm can last upto 7 days once inside....

Maybe we lucky, but it worked for us on month 1! (second time around, already have DS). If you are stuggling I would get a temperature pack from Boots, and don't drink too much around ovulation time, as that mucks up your temperature the next morning, maikng your graph harder to interprete!. Hope all that makes sense.

Good luck!

RLR ? I?d love to help you. I am one of the people who temp and chart and watch CM etc. When I started TTC, I had NO idea what my cycle should be like or what happened when. I then bought Toni Weschler?s book ?Taking Charge of Your Fertility? as recommended to me on here and I learnt so many incredible things about my body. I got my BFP after 7 cycles of charting (I had been on the pill for 18 years and am 33 so that wait wasn?t too bad) sadly I MC recently and am starting the process again but I?m going right back to charting.

It can tell you the following, maybe not the first cycle but definitely after a few when you see your own pattern:

? When you are likely to ovulate
? When you are at your most and least fertile
? When your period is normally due
? How long your luteal phase is (time between ovulation and period)
? If you are pregnant (signified by at least 18 high temps over your coverline)
? If you have any issues and what they are likely to be

Some people find doing this adds stress to TTC but I find the knowledge calms me down.

What has been said about the cervical fluid is true and it?s a really important fertile sign. After AF, the CM starts off thick, gummy like, then proceeds to being creamy/hand lotiony and then, just before OV it can resemble egg white. That is the most fertile stuff. Some people don?t get this but notice that they are much wetter around this time. If you really don?t get much and that happens to a lot of us, you may be able to increase it by drinking a glass of grapefruit juice a day, failing this, there is a sperm friendly lubricant called Pre Seed which mimics your CM and can provide the appropriate medium for sperm to swim and survive in until they meet the egg. This is the reason why the fertile CM is so important.

I?m afraid I cannot tell from the info you gave when you are likely to have ovulated because I don?t know some of the info I listed above. I know that Zita West has a rough calculation for your fertile period in her book but not for ovulation.

Ovulation predictor kits can be useful but there can be a surge of luteinising hormone at other stages of your cycle which might give you a false positive. I do use them myself but only really to back up what I can see happening from my chart.

I hope this helps. If I can give you any more info, let me know

RLR · 27/03/2007 14:32

Glad it helped

First step to start joining in would be to buy a thermometer. There is one in Boots fit for purpose which has charting instructions with it.

You could also join us right away on the temping thread here and we?ll help you. We post our temps every day. If you want to, you could get the book from Amazon but it?s not essential.

If you wanted to you could also start an online chart (I use Ovusoft and you can get a free trial here or you could upload to Fertility Friend for free indefinitely ? I don?t know the details but the others could help with that). Basically we post our charts here and then comment on them here .

It would be fun to have you with us!
