Miscarriage or ectopic? What is going on?

I've never posted on a forum but I'm totally confused with what's going on with my body right now, I wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar experience...

So I found out I was pregnant a couple of weeks ago after the second month of trying and was over the moon!! It's my second pregnancy. First went really smoothly, no problems conceiving, through pregnancy or delivery so all good.

This pregnancy seemed to be going well, had all the symptoms I had with my first but I started having pink discharge (TMI warning!) at 6weeks which lasted 2 days...no aches or pains at all so thought nothing of it.
Started spotting at 6+2days and saw my doctor but again not really concerned as I know bleeding is quite common and no pain or anything. Also still had all of my pregnancy symptoms.
Doctor booked me in for an ultrasound on Monday (when I'd be 6+6days).

On Friday (6+3 days) I started bleeding, not really heavy but a bit lighter than I'd have for a period (I have heavy periods)...still no cramping but I didn't have any pregnancy symptoms.
Saturday the bleeding was slightly heavier and I passed some tissue which from looking at pictures on google looked like I'd had a miscarriage. Absolutely gutted!
Phones 111 and they said as I've got no pain to just wait and go to my EPU appointment on Monday but if I have any heavy bleeding or pain to go straight to a&e.

Had to wait all weekend not knowing whether or not I'd had a mc but I was fairly sure I had.

At EPU appointment they did a pregnancy test (showed I was pregnant but I know that can happen after mc)...then had an ultrasound which showed no evidence of a pregnancy at all.
Then had an internal scan, they thought they could see something near one of my ovaries but could be a cyst and with no pains they didn't think it was an ectopic.

Sent for bloods to check my hcg levels, which were low (although I don't know what they were as wasn't told!).

It all sounded like I'd had a mc especially as I'd passed the tissue. Sent back for a second blood test today (would have been 7+1 day) to check my hcg levels dropped but they've gone up!!

Now I've got another appointment booked for Friday to discuss options and have a further blood test to see what my hcg levels are doing.

The doctor said there was a tiny chance of ectopic due to my symptoms the other day but now they think it is that.

The bleeding has now completely stopped but then so have my pregnancy symptoms.

Has anyone else had this? I just want to know what's going on with my body and all this waiting for blood test results is driving me mad!!

Sorry for long post. So many questions!!

Sorry no experience but didn't want to read and run, all I would say is seek a second opinion if you aren't sure they're right xx

Flashinthepan · 05/07/2017 19:41

First, I'm sorry you are going through this. Second, please ignore anyone who says that no pains means it is not ectopic, even if a Dr says it. If your HCG levels are up and down, you have positive pregnancy tests but nothing in your uterus and they have seen something like a sac somewhere else on a scan you need to go back to the hospital and ask for additional scans. I don't want to scare you but many doctors are not experts or even very well informed about the different presentations of ectopic pregnancy. I had no pain at all with mine, right up until the day I needed surgery. Can I suggest that you look on the ectopic pregnancy trust website and call them for advice?

mummyjl15 · 05/07/2017 19:55

Thanks Flashinthepan, I've not even heard of that so I'll check it out. My hcg results haven't gone up and down, just steadily up so far.
I'll seek some advice from the ectopic pregnancy trust site though. Fingers crossed I'll be fine though and my blood test result will show the hcg levels have dramatically dropped on Friday. It's just the waiting that's so annoying.
Desperate for number 2 but I know I need to wait until I've had a period after mc (if that's what this is)

mummyjl15 · 06/07/2017 07:14

Found out my first hcg levels were 582 when I was meant to be 6+6
Hoping to get my results from yesterday's bloods today. I know they've gone up a bit but no idea how much, it was also only 43 hours after the first test so could it possibly be just too early to tell?
I read that nothing would show up on a scan (US or internal) until hcg levels are 1000-2000 and maybe I'm not as far along as they think?

I made the mistake of measuring my tummy yesterday and both my boobs and tummy have got bigger since Monday (even though I felt like all my symptoms had gone but that may have been after the scare of there being nothing there).

Clinging onto the tiniest amount of hope that maybe it's just too early, I'm not as far along as they thought and my levels are just at the lower end. Should be 7+2 today but maybe I'm a couple of weeks behind.

mummyj it certainly is possible you're not as far along as you thought. I hope that it is good news when you have more information. Good luck.

mummyjl15 · 06/07/2017 09:34

I hope so! Hcg was 693 yesterday so not as high as they should have been if it was a normal pregnancy. Will see what the results are tomorrow but if it's still gradually increasing they think it's an ectopic :(
Fingers crossed it's doubled though and they can find a bean on the scan!

Flashinthepan · 06/07/2017 10:13

Sorry to hear that so far HCG is not rising as expected. Keeping my fingers crossed for you. If you do discover that it is an ectopic pregnancy, I highly recommended contacting the ectopic pregnancy trust for advice, or making use of their forums, advice pages etc.

mummyjl15 · 06/07/2017 10:28

I did look on there and even contacted them but I have no symptoms whatsoever for having an ectopic. Can't wait for my appointment tomorrow, just hope they can tell me what's going on. It's the not knowing and having to wait between test results that's frustrating. The doctor suggested having the injection to end the pregnancy but I'm not having that as I'd have to wait 3-6 months to TTC again!

Stee1 · 06/07/2017 21:27

I had no symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy I had a little bleed and got sent to the epau nothing on scan had bloods then back 2 days later for more they doubled so booked in for another scan and it was ectopic. I had the injection 4 weeks ago and my levels are down to 21 from 1591. I would say have the injection rather than the op as it could damage your tube I know it's a wait but gives you time to get better ect I have 8 weeks left till I can ttc again but gives me time to enjoy my holiday ect xx

Flashinthepan · 06/07/2017 21:44

I also had no symptoms, apart from slight spotting. By the time I found out I was 8 weeks. I had to have surgery as my HCG levels were too high for the injection. If you do have an Ectopic pregnancy, even surgery will require a recovery period. I had a tube removed and was told to wait 3 months to give my body a chance to heal. Hopefully you won't need to worry about any of this but don't rule any treatment options out until you know.

Loosemoose28 · 07/07/2017 01:01

Sorry to hear this OP.

With my exropic I had a heavy-ish period but short and lost like a pinky sticky fluid (almost like blackcurrent juice) for a week. Always had funny periods, wasn't TTC so ignored it.

Did a preg test when I had sharp sided pain and heavier bleeding.
Faint positive.
Went to GP who thankfully sent me straight to EPAU. Nothibg seen on scan but went for laparoscopy and found the ectopic. So I never did the HCG bit.
If they are still unsure and offer a laparsocopy I have had a couple of friends have one while early pregnant for ? Ectopics who have kept that pregnancy as not ectopic with normal pregnancies.

Thoughts are with you. X

mummyjl15 · 07/07/2017 10:48

How many weeks were you Loosemoose28?
I've had no pain at all and had a period type bleed that lasted 5 days, not just spotting which from reading other posts seems to be common with ectopics.

Just had my bloods done so will have the results soon. If my hcg levels have dropped they're going to monitor me over the next few days to check they continue to drop. If they have gone up I've got 3 options, an ultrasound to see if anythings changed, the injection or a laparoscopy.

I'd be 7+3 today, no bleeding, no pain and no pregnancy symptoms. I'm fairly certain I miscarried when I lost the tissue at the weekend as that's when my preg symptoms stopped. The doctor did say hcg levels can rise after m/c before they drop if there's still some tissue remaining. We will see...

OP posts:
Loosemoose28 · 07/07/2017 11:09

Ufortunately I will never fully know the answer to how many weeks I was it was enough my tube was rupturing doctors guess 5-6weeks. Friend had ectopic at 8 weeks so it does vary.

mummyjl15 · 07/07/2017 11:58

So my hcg levels have dropped to 572 so they now don't think it's an ectopic (thankfully!)...chances are I'm still going through a miscarriage and there's just some tissue left hence the higher than normal reading.
Going back for another blood test in a week to check my hcg levels are still dropping and will need to go back weekly until they're below 4.

Fingers crossed my body sorts itself out so we can TTC again after my next period :)

Flashinthepan · 07/07/2017 12:10

I'm pleased to hear that it seems unlikely it is an ectopic although sorry of course that you are losing the pregnancy.

Just a word of warning, hcg levels can go up and down as a symptom of ectopic pregnancy. Also I had a period-style bleed before discovering I was pregnant, I only took a pregnancy test as two weeks later I started spotting and had sore boobs, I was 6 weeks by then.

If you experience any pain, or bleeding, please don't assume that you can't be having an ectopic. It's why they are so hard to diagnose, as they present so differently.

MrsBeeBeeBee · 07/07/2017 20:52

Sorry you're going through this.

I recently had surgery for ectopic pregnancy.
I had no pain at all and it was diagnosed after repeated blood tests showing hcg rising but not doubling, and then a scan showing no sign of pregnancy in the uterus.

I had a laparoscopy and they found the pregnancy in my right fallopian tube.

Do you have another repeat blood test booked to see if your hcg levels continue to drop?

Hope you're doing ok x

mummyjl15 · 07/07/2017 22:20

Thanks for sharing your experience :)
I've got another blood test booked for next Friday to check they've gone down. Fingers crossed they have and all ok :)

mummyjl15 · 08/07/2017 18:06

So last night I started to get some aches and pressure in my lower stomach (like a very mild feeling of what you get during labour when you have the urge to push)...I started to have some clear/pink discharge (TMI!) and that's continued on and off today (although I've had no pain at all today)
This is what I had for 2 days before my miscarriage last week so hopefully that's a sign that I might bleed and 'get rid' of what's left so my hcg levels will drop. Here's hoping anyway!!

Hi mummyjl15. Do you mind telling me how this turned out? I am currently in a very similar position to you and unsure about what's happening.
