Light periods 6 months after mirena removal - will I be able to get pregnant?

I had the mirena coil fitted for 18 months, during which time my periods stopped. It was removed 6 months ago, and since then I have had very light, short periods (2 days and not enough to fill a regular tampon). I used to get EWCM every month, but since mirena I get none. I've done CBD opks and the IC cheapies and never had a peak or positive. I did have a positive CB digital pregnancy test (1-2 weeks) last month (1 day after my period was due) but it quickly faded and the test was negative a week later. Prior to the coil I would have heavy periods that lasted 5 days.

I'm really worried that my hormones are out of wack and my lining is too thin. I'm 38 so having waited 6 months for things to improve, I want to know what to do next. I don't want to waste any more time.

The consultant who removed my coil said I could fall pregnant straightaway but my reproductive system seems to be asleep!

Any advice or experience greatly received.

Thank you.

Hi, I've had the same experience after mirena removal! Im 8 months down the line and my periods are as light as yours! I need one tampon on my first day but after that nothing. I also get a lot of brown spotting for some days before and after. I went to the GP as we are planning ttc later this month but she said no need to worry as long as they are regular.

Wiggleyfingers - sorry to hear you're in the same boat. I don't think it can be right but I suppose the GP knows more than me. You won't know until you try.

I wish I had removed the coil sooner. I do wonder if the egg couldn't implant for me last month, which is why the pregnancy failed so quickly.

Good luck - keep me posted.

Hi there lady’s I came across this post as I had the Mirena taken out in January and since then my periods have also been very light 1-2 days whereas before they were a normal 5 days. I am ttc third child and have had 2 chemical pregnancies already which i’m convinced is because my lining must be really thin. Did any of you go on to have successfull pregnancies? ty x

I had very light periods after having the Mirena removed (had two over 8 years). Before I had the Mirena I had very heavy periods lasting up to 10 days. Afterwards only 2-3 days, very light and a lot less painful than before. I waited a few months to ttc (removed in May, ttc October) and then got pregnant immediately. Good luck.

I'm having the same issue. I'm 34. No kids. Had the Mirena for 5 years with no period. Before they were normal 6 day cycles that required regular tampon changing. But, 5 months after removal my period is super pathetic light and only lasts 2 days. I'm worried about it. TTC past two months which were not successful. I know that's early but I'm tripped out with this period. Worried!!

This happened to me after six years of mirena coil. After 7 months of light periods and no success conceiving I had a heavier period and got pregnant the next month.

I started acupuncture about a month before the heavier period with a fertility specialist who was trying to improve my “blood deficiency”. No idea whether that helped or whether it was just a coincidence!

Been TTC for 1.5 years after IUD removal. Had 2 Mirenas for 14 years and didn’t have a period that whole time. I now have a regular 26 day cycle but my period is so light I don’t need a tampon and lasts 1 day max then a day of spotting. Doctors all don’t say there’s no reason for concern but my instinct still says this is not normal. Hormone tests seemed to come back normal. I had a couple of acupuncture sessions but perhaps I need more. I’m not taking any supplements at the moment. Any advice welcome!

Update: Dispite my last post about tiny periods and TTC I conceived at four months. Small periods didn't affect the process. Everything is normal. Hope this helps.

I got my IUD COPPER removed in June since then I had 2 really light periods and then last month a 15 day period... I’m freaking out, is this normal? Am I bleeding what I didn’t bleed last 2 months, I was suppose to be ovulating today but took the clear blue test and it was negative... @SpeckyB how did it go for u? Did you get pregnant ? I am worried about all the stuff in the Internet? Is my lining to small? Am i premenopausal? Are my hormones the problem? When am I ovulating? Super lost here!! Help

SpeckyB · 09/10/2019 08:13

@Givepa - I fell pregnant very soon after starting this post. Maybe the responses gave me the confidence I needed! All went well and I had a healthy baby in early 2018.

Good luck and try not to worry (easy to say and hard to do). It’s still early days for you and hopefully your periods will settle.

I saw this post and I was curious about outcome. I know it’s from a few years back but I’m in same boat right now

Kallig · 15/02/2022 19:25

I am having similar issues. I had my mirena removed after 7 years (2 in total). I didn’t have periods while I had the IUD. I’m TTC and it’s been 4 months of light and short periods. Spotting before and after and only really needing a tampon two days. It also does not need to be changed often. I’m super worried about it. Did anyone ever find out what caused this? Or did anyone ever have their period return to normal?

Just wanted to encourage anyone reading this thread and wanting to get pregnant. I just turned 40. I had Mirena for 13 years, no periods during the entire time. I have two kids now already in their teens. Desided we wanted one kid more. I had the coil removed early August 2021, had immediately regular but supershort and light period, basically 1 day, needing to use only panty liners. I was sure I will not be able to get pregnant, that the lining just don't build up. But here I am after 5 rounds of 1 day periods and pregnant 7 weeks, hoping the little one will hang on until the end. I tried acupuncture twice, it didn't have any impact on the length of the period. I did take also folic acid, q10, L arginine, vitamins d and e for fertility and improved blood circulation. None of it normalized the period during this short period of time, but still I was lucky to get pregnant.

So maybe the periods will settle in time maybe not, but despite the light and short period there is hope.

how did things turn out for you, @Wiggleyfingers?

How did things turn out for you @butterfly800, @MoonSushi, @Liss4ya and @Kallig? intrigued to hear. In same boat.

how did things turn out for you, @Wiggleyfingers?

Hi!
I went on to have two healthy pregnancies and babies. Both times I fell pregnant in the first month of trying, so clearly no correlation between short periods and fertility for me. I've been off contraception for nearly 4 years and periods are still insanely light so I'm wondering if it's just natural for me, as any link to the coil wouldn't be relevant after this long.
Hope that helps, any questions let me know :)

@Wiggleyfingers the mystery of periods! Thanks for sharing your good news story. Really nice and reassuring to see how things have turned out further down the road 💚
