Hope it's OK to post here. Currently Ttc #2, its now been about 16 months. Dd1 conceived naturally after 9 months. (I'm 38). I've been to my gp, who has initially arranged Day 21 blood tests. She rattled off a list of things they would check for, unfortunately I was so nervous the words went in one ear and out the other. Could anyone tell me what they'll be looking for? I have a sneaking suspicion I have an underactive thyroid, it runs in the family and I can tick off the symptoms on the NHS website. Is this something they will check for or would I have to raise that at another time?

Well the day 21 blood test is to test for your level of progesterone. A high level over about 30 will indicate that you are ovulating. It sounds like your doctor might have put you down for some other testing at the same time, so thyroid function could well be one of them as my doctor mentioned testing for it but I'd already not long been tested due to having issues with constant fatigue and joint pain. I was also tested to see if I was immune from reubella. I think when they are testing you for multiple things you get a few tubes, the nurse doing the bloods may be able to tell you

I'm a phlebotomist and day 21 would normally only be progesterone, although our Drs always do day 2/3 bloods as well and it's normally on those we would check Lh/fsh oestrogen, prolactin, thyroid, and other routine bloods, our Drs would sometimes add in rubella and varicella immunity too

Thanks. Dr didn't mention a day 3 test, which I was half expecting to have to do? I have a short irregular cycle and day 21 will be around day 16 ish for me, I'm worried I'll have the day wrong, I'd be on safer ground with day 3!

Oh that's interesting info AuntieMay
I only got offered the day 21 for some reason. Although I've been referred to a fertility specialist so maybe there will be more tests

Rose was your day 21 test just progesterone?

Yes I had the thyroid test before I mentioned ttc to the doc. they suggested I could have it check but then saw that is not long had it done

Thanks, I think I'll ask if that's something that will be checked when I'm at the appointment for bloods, if not I'll speak to the dr afterwards.

Oh, another question, sorry! Do you have to fast before the thyroid check?

Thyroid isn't fasting

Different trusts will have different protocols on which bloods are done when and also different Drs will do in different orders as well

Thanks Smile
