Ovarian volume freak out after MMC - so confused

Hi,

I wondered if anyone can help me out with advice on ovarian volume/reserve tests? I had an fsh test 18 months ago with an endocrine and gynae professor who I see for an endocrine condition I have. That, along with some other blood tests came back showing normal ovarian reserve and excellent reproductive profile.

I started TTC in November and have got pregnant first try two months running but sadly these ended in chemical pregnancy followed by MMC.

MY GP suggested I go private to deal with the MMC; I didn't have time to go down the NHS route because I'm only in the UK for a couple of days (currently based overseas for partner's work).

The private doc dealt with it but also gave me info I didn't ask for. He said my transvaginal scan showed small ovaries, especially the left and I should not delay trying because my "ovarian volume" is low for my age. I'm 34, I don't smoke, I am careful about my alcohol intake and the women in my family on both sides have normal menopause and babies right into their 40s.

He said my left was 4.0ml and my right was 7.7ml.

I had a scan in Australia two weeks ago at a private women's clinic which showed 4 pics with a range of 3.5-13ml on the right and 3.2-6.5ml on the left. I guess this depends on the view. The measurements were on average bigger than the latest ones.

I am utterly confused. The fertility doc did say it wasn't the best time in my cycle to check this and I should verify later, but didn't say when. He did not do AMH, antral follicle count or FSH test, just looked at the size of my ovaries. Is that sufficient info? I have never previously heard of ovarian size/volume being a marker.

I just discovered that this doc was involved in a scandal years ago in which women got the wrongs embryos during IVF. The unit was closed and he went on to be promoted and head up another one, much to the horror of certain colleagues.

I'm a nervous wreck, I can't stop crying and I don't know who to believe.

Does anyone have any advice?

x

This surprises me as my consultant counted my antral follicles then recommended an AMH test (my Fsh had come back fine).. my AMH was really low for my age.. 6.3 when I was 31. I would seriously get a second opinion?

Thanks, Ellesbelles! Yeah I was always under the impression that the combo of fish, AMH and astral follicle count was the way to do this. I have had so many scans lately and no other doc or monographer has mentioned ovary size. I'm particularly surprised that he volunteered this info as part of a scan for a completely different purpose.

I have an apt with my endocrine specialist in a month (he actually contributes to the textbooks on ovarian props) but it feels like a very long time to wait right now!

FSH, not fish. Terrible auto correct.

Just thought I would do an update on this.

I had my AMH ad FSH tested and both came back as "optimal fertility."

Also had another scan of ovaries and volume came back higher.

So this horrid "fertility doctor" terrified me necessarily!

Started to TTC again and fingers crossed it will be third time lucky x
