How long did you try to get pregnant for before seeking medical advice?

Hi All,

I'm 36 and husband is 43, we haven't been using contraception for 1 year, but only been actively trying since Sep. Last time I saw the GP, she advised me to give it 6 months and if not pregnant for both us to come and see her. After another disappointing month of not being pregnant I mentioned to my husband and he promptly told me we needed to give it more time. He has always expressed that he doesn't want to head down the IVF route.
He has a son from a previously relationship, so I feel it's easy for him to say that.
AIBU for wanting to check there is noting underlying.
Apologies if this is an insensitive topic for those who have been trying for longer, as I know 6 months isn't a long time to have been trying.

As you're over 35, I think 6 months is the norm to start asking questions/begin tests.
I requested tests from my GP at 11 months but I'd already been diagnosed with pcos so knew the reason why we hadn't conceived.

Hi OP, just hopping on to say I'm in a similar boat - DP and I are 36 and 42 and been ttc for 7 months without any luck. (I actually just posted in this forum about my weird 19 day cycle this month!)

I've already been to see the GP (around late November I think?) and because of my age they ordered day 21 and day 3 hormone tests - had the day 21 done, which was fine, but haven't managed to do the day 3 one as my cycles are quite erratic and it's hard to book a blood test for the right time. I'm now having acupuncture and we've decided to give it a couple more months and then head back to the GP.

We've discussed ivf/adoption in vague terms, but really not sure what we'll do if it turns out we can't conceive naturally.

Well I wasn't in a rush to have a baby but after over 2 and half years of getting away with using no birth control me n my husband have gone to get checked out. Not sure how I feel about IVF though & I still feel like I'd have a chance if we tried properly with timings

Going to give it another 6 months .... my life's pretty full on anyway, so it's maybe stress related. Hoping once this all calms down it will happen naturally ! Btw - I also have weird cycles can't really work it out and trying not to be too focused on it 🙄 my sis is a dr and he advice is just keep having sex straight after your period - so trying that this month rather than being obsessed with ovulation kits and glo !

There's a few steps and things to try before IVF, which unfortunately you'd have to pay for due to DH having a child already. Once you've been trying for 6 months I'd go to the docs.
