Long periods and TTC

We are ttc for the first time and I'm a bit confused as to when I'll ovulate as my periods are usually pretty long (current one came on 10 Jan and is showing no signs of abating. I'm pretty sure I'll still be bleeding on 17 &18 Jan but then my most fertile days, according to the MN ovulation calendar, start on the 20th. I read that we should dtd in the 2 days leading up to ovulation but if I'm still bleeding will this compromise our chances?

Sorry, can you tell I'm clueless? Just wanting to try to get this right. Thanks in advance

As far as I know the length of your actual period doesn't have any influence on it. It's all to do with your cycle length, i.e. The length of time from your first day of proper bleeding to the day before your next period. If you have longer cycles you will most likely ovulate later, you can track when you're ovulating using a combination of ovulation predictor kits (OPK's) and by taking your basal body temperature everyday. If you google these things you will find lots of info about them and cycle lengths etc

Thanks for replying passmethewine It's so bloody confusing. I've got OPKs but will still aim to dtd in the days before I think I should be ovulating and during. Fingers crossed!
