anyone give vitamens to dh for low sperm count?

My dh will not get another test and everything is fine with me, I'm afraid that he might have a low sperm count or crippled sperm that just can't bust through that egg So, I bought him zinc, vitamen E, and selenium, and boxers. Do you think these will help, I'm desperate. He is switching jobs in july and can't do ivf or iui yet as he has to see how the job goes, but still ttc as the age plays a part in it.

Hi, There was a programme on eating/diet a few weeks ago and part of that was a study of diet on low sperm count. Basically what they showed was lots of fresh fruit and veg smoothies (which was what the guys had to have each day) didn't necessarily increase the sperm count of all of the men but it greatly increased the healthiness of the sperm. I think it was due to all of the anti-oxidants in the fresh fruit and veg that kill free radicals that can damage the sperm when they are made. I think they said that also, brazil nuts and chinese ?? mushrooms were good - I think they both contain selenium so that supplement should hopefully help.
Anyway, hope this makes a bit of sense. xxx

thanks, he loves mushrooms, I'm lucky. He hates his vitamens I have to push him into eating them or crush them and put them in his food because he hates swallowing them, he's a big baby.

I put my dh on a supplement called "Proxeed" (you can get it from AccessDiagnostics.co.uk). It's supposed to help with sperm count. It's a powder that you mix with fruit juice and drink twice a day.

I also gave dh a multi-vitamin and a zinc supplement.

Unfortunately we've not had any feedback on whether dh's swimmers had improved when we had our ICSI, so I can't say whether it made any difference or not.

Fresh fruit or smoothies will help, eat organic where possible. Cut out smoking and alcohol if possible. Avoid tight underwear, and hot baths.

Hi Wishing1,

Many things have been tried to improve sperm count without success. I would certainly not want you to spend lots of cash on products that are not proven (I'm talking here of really expensive pills and potions advertised to do such things).

Sperms are complicated things and there is much about them we do not understand.

Why will your DH not get another test, is it head in sand syndrome and or a fear of him having the fertility problem?. If either are the case he really ought to talk with the consultant or medical team you are under. The three of you need to be able to work as a team. He needs to realise that.

It may be that you won't need IUI or IVF after all. Do you as yet have a proper diagnosis of the underlying problem/s?. If not I would go all out to seek this and your DH should be tested again. One previously poor sperm count (if this is the case) does not necessarily mean there is a problem with sperm count or motility; this is why repeat testing should be done.

What tests have you had done to date?. I only ask as some can and do get missed.

Hi there Wishing, when I went to see the consultant at the assisted conception unit at our local hospital she recommended my dh take something called Wellman from Boots. Dh sperm count wasn't low, but there were more deformed ones than they liked to see. He was still within the acceptible levels for mobility and motility and sperm numbers, but the consultant recommended the Wellman to boost the numbers of normal sperm. He bitched and whinged about taking them because they taste slightly like marmite, but three months later I was pregnant, so perhaps there's something in it!

Ok I understand it's more supplementation than the average man would agree to take and its not for everyone. My dh and I discussed the options as it is a very personal thing. He takes:

Multivit, Zinc, B12, L'Arginine, Co-enzmeQ10, Selenium, L-Carnitine, N Acetyl L-Carnitine, Vitamin C & E, Flaxseed Oil, Fish oil, 1 sachet of Proxeed a day.
The more obscure ones coming from Holland & Barratt online.

I bought Wellman for my DP and also banned him from having hot baths! (PS it worked!)

There's a book called "Natural Remedies for Infertility" sorry can't remember who it's by. I lent it to 2 friends who had probs & they both have babies now. Threre is a vitamin pill recommended by the author esp for men plus loads of other tips. Another friend was trying to conceive for over 2 years. Her DH's sperm was tested and he was told he had very low sperm count/almost infertile. By chance he broke his leg & was on so many (prescribed) drugs he had to give up alcohol. He wasn't a big drinker before but hey ho, DD is born 10 months later.

Thanks ladies so much for your help, the first count was really low 15 million, so since he is a physician himself he says he "knows" how count fluctuates and if he takes vitamens, boxer, no hot baths, then he will wait for 3 months to see if I'm not pg then he will get another test. Wellman sounds great, I will try and get ahold of it stat! My fsh, lh, estradiol, came back great. fsh, and lh were in the 2-3 range and I'm 38, doctor was shocked! So, besides dh's count there isn't any other reason that we know of why I'm not getting pg. Maybe we don't bd enough, I work evenings, he works days, we usually bd about 4 days before ov and the day before and sometimes the day after.

Wishing1 you sound as if you are in a very similar position to me. No hot baths in our house, not much alcohol and deffo wellman..

my doctor is a firm believer in boxers, i just spoke to him today to tell him i need an appointment and will be bringing my temp charts in and he said, "is he wearing boxers?" lol is your dh taking vitamens too?

Yes he is and he hasn't had a bath for ages!! Just showers. I have had my bloods checked and stuff like that and all is very much in order apparently. So fingers crossed. he has a return test in a month.
We have a dd aged just 5 and have been trying for ages. We are both mid 30's and you?

We are both LATE 30's! He has no children and I have 17 and 13 year olds who want a new baby in the house. He is my 2nd dh! Daughter goes to college next year and 13 year old is with me half the time, we have joint custody, so before it's too late and to give my new dh something wonderful, were hoping to extend to the family;)
