Can bleeding show up on an ultrasound?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

I'm TTC currently but was having some pain and ended up having an ultrasound scan. The doctor wanted to know if I was currently on my period or if not when I was next due. Due to TTC, I recently came off BC and unknown to me was having a withdrawal bleed on the day but I didn't tell the doctor this as I didn't notice until I got home. After she figured out when my next cycle would start she said she had found some scarring on my uterus. Now I'm wondering if maybe whatever was on the scan was bleeding and not scarring? I know that with a withdrawal bleed that you don't shed any uterus lining but could it be possible for blood from a withdrawal bleed could have been present on the scan or would that kind of thing not show up? I only ask because it was as if she was ruling out any bleeding before she mentioned the scar tissue although this could just have been routine and the order in which she spoke about it was completely coincidental!

I was going to call my GP tomorrow to mention it to her in case it made any difference to the results but I don't want to look like a div blabbing on about bleeding when it probably doesn't even show up on an ultrasound

Not sure if you've had your answer yet, but when I had a miscarriage the bleeding was visible on the scan

I'm so sorry to hear you had a miscarriage :( I'm unsure if it could be mistaken for scar tissue as I'm led to believe that scar tissue isn't usually detectable on an US. The bleed I had was fairly heavy that day but I don't know if all bleeding would show or if the bleeding would have to be considerable :/

I also had an US after two miscarriages and bleeding was obvious on both occasions.

I'm sorry to hear about your miscarriages :( I might mention the fact I was having a bleee that day to my GP. I don't think it will make a difference to the results but you never know!

I had to have the A word a couple of years ago (really didn't want to but there were complications and I didn't have much of an option ) and I had a bit of an infection afterwards due to some retained tissue and a gynaecologist examined me and told me she couldn't find anything to suggest that I'd had any kind of damage done to my uterus during it. I also didn't have a D&C which is what usually causes scarring. So I'm wondering if perhaps the scarring isn't actually there at all but I think it might be wishful thinking :(

It could be related. Did the infection just clear up with antibiotics? How long after the procedure was the infection? Definitely worth mentioning to your GP.

Have you ever had a D&C or anything else which could cause scarring?

Sorry to hear what you went through a couple of years ago. It sounds pretty traumatic

Thank you, it was very upsetting and obviously finding it even harder to deal with now it appears to have caused damage :(

The A was either vacuum or D&E so no D&C (that I know of) The infection started 5 days after the A and when I was examined, they said it was the start of the infection and so I took a course of antibiotics and was fine.

I just assumed when the dr said she'd seen scarring that that's what it was from but then I thought back to a couple of years ago and it doesn't all really add up but I suppose it is still a possibility even if I caught the infection early :(

Very quickly (will write more later) my friend with Asherman's says it's very unlikely a GP would be able to pick up scar tissue from an ultrasound unless they were a specialist...

When I had a scan at 5 weeks a large implantation bleed was clearly visible.

What kind of pain are you having?

I suppose an initial question is, did the GP definitely see scarring on the u/s given that scarring isn't normally visible on u/s? (This is what you've been saying all along but is a definite concern).

Ali, I couldn't remember my password for my other account so had to use this one which is my old one!

Basically the woman did the ultrasound just on my right side (where my pain has been) then she sent it up to a registrar in the emergency surgical assessment unit (I was an outpatient there due to them originally thinking my appendix was causing the pain) so it was a dr from there who said that she could see it. Whether the ultrasound technician said so too I'm not sure as I don't know if they examine them or literally just take the scan and send the photos to a dr.

I've heard from a few people with AS now that scar tissue is very unlikely to be picked up by an US but then that makes me worry that perhaps it's so bad that it CAN be seen on one?!

The pain I'm having started 2 weeks on Wednesday, sharp pain in my right ovary but only when I went for a wee. Then it started happening afterwards too, pain would linger. They thought appendix then ovarian cyst. The dr spoke to the gynaecologist RE the pain and they asked had the pain started since I'd switched to the pill (had implant removed the Friday before and so had been on the pill for less than a week) so I said it had and they seem to think the pain is due to that. They seem to think it's unlikely to be linked to what they think is scar tissue just because I've never had any issues with pain until now yet my D&E and infection was way back in April 2015. The pain is still there when I go for a wee but on a scale of 1-10, 10 being absolute agony, I would say it's a 2 at best. It's not painful as such now, more uncomfortable but nowhere near as bad as it was when it was at its worst.

I'm hoping to get an appointment with my GP for Wednesday. I kind of want her to just go "oh you were having a bleed that day? That's probably what they saw then" but I've got a feeling it won't be as simple as that!

GG thank you for your reply :) I would say the bleed I was having that day was heavier than implantation bleeding so I guess it's more than possible that it could have shown up as an anomaly on the scan.

They do get things wrong on scans. It happened to someone I know.

It seems a bit of a coincidence that the pain started after you switched birth control. Perhaps the pain was your ovary waking up - I feel my ovary a lot at various stages in the cycle. Sometimes it's uncomfortable but not really painful.

Hope the GP can reassure you on Weds.

Yeah, they were more concerned about the pain rather than the supposed scarring but they seem to think it will ease off within a few weeks. It's barely noticeable now to be honest so I think it's most likely hormone related.

I suppose if the dr wasn't looking for bleeding or expecting it to be there and she wasn't a gynaecologist and just a normal dr, there's a chance it could have been mis-read. Keeping my fingers crossed for that but hopefully I'll know more soon

Morning :) I rang yesterday to get an appointment and the receptionist said she's not in until Friday so going to ring her first thing in the morning.

I've been having more of a think about everything and I remember the dr saying when speaking to the gynaecologist something about calcification. From what I've read and what others with AS have told me, calcification isn't really anything to worry about as it's not harmful and doesn't cause fertility problems unless it's very large. I wondered if perhaps that's why the dr didn't seem overly concerned about it and was rather blasé about whether or not I'd have trouble conceiving but then I remembered that she also mentioned Asherman's to the gynaecologist and scarring to me so maybe not. It's so frustrating not knowing what's going on!
